IE6 not responding on startup, also affecting Outlook

When I start IE6, the browser will immediately stall and
clicking on the window results in a Not Responding message.
If I let it sit like that for about a minute or two, the
browser will come back to life and load my homepage. This
problem also appears whenever I try to open an html email
in Outlook and any help file that is written in html.

Anyone have any idea's as to what's behind this. It's
obviously got something to do with the html rendering
engine, but how do I correct the problem? Is it possible
that ActiveX has something to do with it. Any idea's would
be appreciated. Thanks.

First eliminate any scumware.
See

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each need to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.
