IE6 hangs on startup

I'm having a maddening problem where ie6 hangs on start up. I can
browse web w/ firefox, as well as retreive mail. When I try to open an
html email however, outlook 2003 hangs. MSN 7 hangs while trying to
populate the tabs on the left (web call to MS?), and I can't run any
HTML help apps.

It seems as if any http access invloked by windows results in hangapp.

I noticed dr. watson in task mamanger (dwwin.exe then drwtsn32.exe)
when this occurs. I have to kill the hung process to shut down the
hung app.

I do a daily virus scan (norton) and spyware (ad-aware). Neither
reveal anythign interesting.

It really feels like a browser hijack, but I've been unable to detect
anything out of the ordinary.

Any suggestions b4 I have go nuclear and resinstall?

Desperate.

First eliminate any spyware.
