When i click on the IE icon from my desktop it no longer autodials up - it just says no connection present and then asks if i want to retry or view content offline - if i click retry it connects. Anyone any ideas?

I'm having the same problem. Have you tried clicking:

tools>internet options>connections>always dial my default
connection>apply

This is what everyone recommends to me (but I might have
a nore serious problem than you)

Click on your ISP icon. When the window comes up to dial to network, click
cancel. On the "Connect To" window, check "Connect Automatically".

If you have the google toolbar installed, uninstall it, and install the new
version. The previous version of the toolbar had a conflict with an IE
update that made it fail to autoconnect.

The Connection icon on your desktop is supposed to be how you connect to
your ISP.
It's just being lazy to insist on clicking the internet explorer icon to
connect.
Anyway, the first thing anyone has to do is connect to their ISP.
