I have two problems which I believe are related. I am running 98SE and have
uninstalled, reinstalled and repaired IE6 and 5.5.

I cannot click on a link and have a 2nd window open up correctly. It freezes
with a frame and header only. I can open a 2nd browser and cut and paste the
link if it is a complete link and not a hyperlink/short cut (I think that is
the correct term). When I click on a thumbnail of a photo I have the same
problem.

The 2nd problem is that I am not able to download from Windows Update. The
download/install box opens but nothing happens. I have the IE6 setup file
saved or I would not have been able to try that uninstall/reinstall fix.

I have run Norton Anti Virus, Ad-Aware, SpyBot, CWShredder, and Hijackthis
and believe my machine is clean. I have tried most of the fixes I have read
on this group. I also run ZoneAlarm firewall.

The best I can figure is that this started when I loaded software from Made
E-Z Software that was forms for corporate records, minutes, etc. I loaded
this on 2 machines and had multiple problems with internet connections,
modems, etc. One machine had an uninstall program by MacAfee that monitored
the installation and did a complete uninstall and that machine has no
problems now. The other machine did not have the monitor running and has
been having the above problems since I uninstalled using Add/Remove
Programs.

I really do not want to start at fdisk and do a clean install to fix this
problem. Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hey I just posted the exact same problem. It started after I downloaded some
software. My computer is clean too. Ran McAfee, Spybot etc. Reinstalled DUN,
tried repairing IE6. Tried restoring RPCRT4.dll.

Well, the At&T staff respond immediately and they are open 24/7, so I
thought the MS staff also operate the same way, didn't realize they are off
weekends!

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If that doesn't fix it, see this article:

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#new_window

5. If you are using WinXP try this:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (msconfig for WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk' ("Expand File" for WinXP).
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 (i386 for WinXP) folder of your installation CD-ROM
(typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs (Windows\i386 for
WinXP) folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System (C:\Windows\System32
for WinXP), and click OK. System File Checker (or msconfig) looks for the
file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been
successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

Windows Update Fails:
Disable your anti-virus when obtaining the updates.
Make sure that your firewall is allowing the connection to Windows Update .
This would be on ports 80 and 443.
