Can't open links in new window

Up until recently, when I clicked a link in "window 1", the results appeared
in a new "window 2" -- and subsequent links clicked in "window 1" opened in
that same "window 2".

Then I installed IE7...hated it...uninstalled it. Now back in IE6.

Now, when I click on subsequent links nothing happens (nothing changes in
"window 2", no "window 3" opens, address doesn't even try to load). I
have to close the 2nd window each time before I click a new link, in order
for a new 2nd window to open. I tried resetting to "reuse active window" but
then not even the first link would load.

Could this be due to some setting I had in IE7 being retained in my
registry? I use this function daily in my job, and would really like to find
a fix!!

update/reinstall your scripting engines from here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp

If no joy, go to File Types (My Computer...Tools...Folder Options...File
Types tab)
Scroll down to the URL: Hypertext Transfer Protocol file type, click to
highlight, click Edit, click Open, click Edit (slightly different with Me -
click to highlight, click Advanced, click Open, click Edit).

Application used: "C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\iexplore.exe" -nohome
Use DDE box should be checked
DDE Message: "%1",,-1,0,,,,
Application: IExplore
DDE...not running: <blank>
