BSOD on opening IE6

Hi all,

I am not convinced this is directly linked to IE6, but thought I would start
here!

When I open IE6, I get a BSOD with the error starting 0x0000007E, which I
have researched and found to be normally related to memory or drivers. I have
run memtest with no errors, and disabled all IE add ons. The PC is running
perfectly happily until I open IE. I have also tried installing a different
browser, but this causes the same problem.

I have uninstalled the original NIC and tried two others.

The computer will run okay in Safe Mode, but I get the same problem in Safe
Mode with Networking. IE will open when the network cable is unplugged, (with
a page cannot be found error), but when the cable is plugged back in, the
BSOD appears (I have also swapped out the network cable).

I'm stumped! Can anybody offer any other suggestions - I really wanted to
avoid reinstalling Windows!

Thanks very much.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
