IE6 File Download Not Working

L

Len Krauss

IE6 running under WinME, with all critical updates applied for both.

Downloading files of any type doesn't work. The File Download Dialog Box
doesn't appear. The warning box doesn't appear for .exe files. Sometimes an
Internet screen from the download site will appear that displays the word
"downloading" but this is in fact not happening.

At one time this PC had Netscape installed and Netscape's Smart Download
plug-in (this can work with IE6). All of this has been uninstalled using
control panel add/remove. I later also deleted all registry entries that
refer to Netscape. I did an IE6 repair and later a reinstall. IE6
downloading didn't work before or after any of these steps were taken.

I'm guessing that there's some remnant in the registry that's misdirecting
the download action. Perhaps IE6 is looking for that download plug-in, but I
didn't see where in IE6 I could diable that. Any advice would be
appreciated.

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303401

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.

Hi,

Please try the following:

1) Open Internet Explorer
2) Click on 'Tools', 'Internet Options'.
3) Click on the 'Security' tab.
4) Click on 'Custom Level'.
5) Scroll down to the header 'File Downloads'.
6) Ensure that they are Enabled.
7) Click on OK to exit Security Settings.
8) Click on OK to exit Internet Options.

Does this help your situation?

Best Regards,

Altrus

Thanks for the tip. I checked and downloads were enabled. The fix was
deleting the Plugin registry key as Alan suggested above.
