IE6 Favorites Icons XP Pro

D

DayLee1

I have a problem with the Favorites icons randomly disappearing. This
is not the same problem as reported before, where icons are replaced by
the blue "e". Sometimes my icons are correct, other times they refresh
with a generic page or file icon. I have tried moving icons to a new
location and running "Favorg" to no avail. This is a real mystery, as
it is random, the correct icons appearing about 10 per cent of the
time. Sometimes, after a reboot, the correct icons are there, sometimes
not, but they don't last.
Any help on this? Thanks in advance.

Hi Day :)

These are known as favicons.ico (Favorite Icons) and they normally will only
last until your Internet Explorer Temp files are cleared.

You don't mention what version of Windows you are using, but, try an IE
repair
or TweakUI Power Toys if applicable to your version of Windows:
TweakUI.

or.

The Favicons are stored in the Temporary Internet Files (TIF) and disappear
when they expire out of TIF or TIF is cleared. Get FavOrg:
http://www.gratilog.net/anglais/internet/favorg.zip
http://uk.geocities.com/personel44/files/favorg.zip
FavOrg - Restore and Save Favorite Icons (Line 108)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

and..

Icons are temporarily stored in a file called iconcache.dll, You might try
deleting this file and restart your computer, Windows should automatically
rebuild the iconcache.dll on reboot. Be sure to make a bckup copy just in
case.

Hope this helps :)

Thank you for your reply. I am running XP Professional SP2.
Unfortunately, I have tried FavOrg with no luck. As I said, I think
this is a different problem, as I do not get the blue "e" generic
icons, but a more generic one. This happens even when not deleting the
temporary Internet files.

Thank you. I believe you are correct about the Icon cache. I noticed
that after rebooting, the correct icons appear, but if I refresh the
screen, they are gone. What is the name of the icon cache file in XP
Pro? I tried a search, but could not find it.

Upon further investigation, I found that the Favorites in Windows
Explorer display correctly, but not in Internet Explorer. If I hit
"Refresh" in IE, the Favorites display correctly, then are quickly
replaced by generic file icons. Sometimes, if I hit "Refresh" quickly,
the correct icons in Favorites will stick. I have renamed the
Iconcache.db file and let Windows recreate it, but no luck.
Does anyone have any further ideas?

Thanks, but I tried that also. I'm wondering if it has to do with a
third-party plugin......
It's interesting because my son says he has the same problem on his PC.
He's running Media Center with IE6. Could be that we have a common
application that would cause this? We both have installed the same
version of NVidia display drivers.

Hi,
Has there been any resolution to this issue?
I am having the exact same problem, I have XP Pro SP2, Nvidia Graphics
Cards, and the icons in both Favorites and History show as blank, generic
icons (

The favicons are stored in TIF and disappear when they are removed from TIF.
Try FavOrg:
http://www.gratilog.net/anglais/internet/favorg.zip
http://uk.geocities.com/personel44/files/favorg.zip
FavOrg - Restore and Save Favorite Icons (Line 108)

or get AM-Deadkink

Hi,
Thanks for the respons, I'll give those a try tonight when i get home from
work.
Although these look like they are supposed to preserve custom icons.

My problem is that ALL icons, including the blue 'e' icons do not show up
both in IE and in Windows 'Favorites' menus. They will show up occasionally
but more often then not they don't show up at all.

Again, i'll give those programs a go tonight and let you know if it works.

Thanks again )
