IE6 does not load some pages--FireFox does fine

A

Alan

Lately ( possibly after installing service pack2) I have been having
problems with IE6 not loading many pages when I go on the internet.
I've never had a problem before with it and my XP Home Edition. I
simply get a blank page and I believe it says "done" at the bottom.
No error messages. I have tried to repair to no avail. I haven't
noticed that these non-loadable pages are of any particular type. As
a matter of fact, it seems like hit or miss with the same pages. I
checked most ( if not all) the settings and all seems to be OK.
I can easily work with Mozilla Firefox with no problems at all.
Some programs automatically default to IE6 and if I can't load the
page I end up copy/paste the url into Firefox and I'm fine. Again,
this happened right ( or soon) after I installed service pack 2 for
XP, and I have not rerad anything from Microsoft or anywhwere else how
I may fix this problem. I do not want to reinstall Windows all over
again unless it is my LAST hope. Anybody got a suggestion or two? I
would be very thnkful for some kind of clue to this.
Thanks,
Al

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If that doesn't fix it, see this article:

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#new_window

5. If you are using WinXP try this:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (msconfig for WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk' ("Expand File" for WinXP).
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 (i386 for WinXP) folder of your installation CD-ROM
(typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs (Windows\i386 for
WinXP) folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System (C:\Windows\System32
for WinXP), and click OK. System File Checker (or msconfig) looks for the
file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been
successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

This is slightly related but I've been trying to research the solution for a
week and would love a simple answer if anyone could supply it. I also have
Xp Home Edition.

When I open certain pages, part of them have a message: Windows cannot open
this (I'm paraphrasing) But it does definitely say :check your browser.
Believe me, I've been checking it. Maybe it's the advertisements that would
have been in those parts of the pages? But to see that message all over the
pages is strange.

Also, how does one turn off the little red X (placeholders). Maybe that's
part of it?

SOmething is blocking some images. Sorry not to be clearer than that. I
need images to be coming through clearly like they used to.

Thanks.

First, what is the exact error message.

For the red X, first go to Tools | Internet Options Advanced and scroll down
to multimedia. Make sure that Show Pictures is checked and Show
Placeholders is not checked.

There are many possible causes and solutions.
Try the quick, easy fix first. Clear the IE cache from IE> Tools> Internet
Options> General> Delete files and Delete offline content. Reset the TIF
folder size to about 50MB (Settings button) and clear it occasionally.

Thanks for your reply. Read them all. Didn't seem to apply. Here's the
message I get, verbatim. (Here's the set-up, beforehand: I have a search
engine which finds items for me in Google, Yahoo, etc. When it finds certain
items I want it to open, it says:

Internet Explorer was unable to link to the Web page you requested. The page
might be temporarily unavailable.

If you have visited this page previously and you want to view what has been

Help menu, and then click Contents and Index.

SO. That's why I brought it here. Thanks

Check for a file named HOSTS with no extension (not Hosts.sam). It may be a
hidden file. Open it with Notepad and remove any line referencing the site.
Or, rename HOSTS to OLDHOSTS

Hey thanks!!
I thought I did that first solution, but it could've been a different entry
in the "run" window. It seems that I have IE6 running all the url's I task
it to. But I still have the others to check out if I get stuck again.
Thanks Frank ( and all).
