IE6 Fails to run; but, Mozilla Firefox works OK

Have a Dell Inspiron 1150. Was working OK; then, IE6 simply failed to load;
although, Task Manager reflects each instance of IE6 I try to load. It's
just that the browser never comes up. Also, CPU useage appears to be maxed
out.

Then, I download Mozilla Firefox as an alternative test and Firefox works
fine, no problems, not a glitch, but IE6 still fails.

Outlook Express still works fine, MSN works fine, But, no browsing via IE6
or Explorer.

Any ideas - Microsoft says to goto the Update Center; but, it's a catch-22;
as, without IE6 working, can't get to the update center.

Any ideas anyone?

Are you running any kind of security software that claims to have a
"Firewall". Not necessarily the cause but I have seen at least 2 instances
of faulty firewalls doing this recently.

Try tools>manage add-ons and disable everything in there, Google toolbar,
Yahoo, all of them. If that fixes it the isolate the offender by elimination
and uninstall using add/remove programs.

Same problem when you boot into Safe Mode?

CPU usage is maxed out ... by WHAT? You never mentioned WHICH process was
using most or all of the CPU's time.

I'm having the same problem - IE6 won't connect but FireFox, Outlook, etc ok. Hijack logs & SilentRunner logs looked fine, IEFix, WinsockxpFix, and a bunch of dll re-registrations did not solve the prob. Tried disabling all add-ons, McAfee, firewalls... no dice. Booting into safe mode yeilds the same prob. Eldergeek's method II nearly crashed my system. Repair/Install from the XP pro CD (w/ sp2) also did not resolve the prob. Running out of ideas and really don't want to reinstall XP completely. Has anyone gotten this resolved yet?
