IE6 desktop icon missing from WinXP Home

My IE icon disappeared after getting some infections. I've cleaned up my
machine but I can't seem to get the Icon back short of creating a shortcut.
I don't want the short cut, I want the real deal IE icon. I've gone into
Desktop settings and made sure the "Internet Explorer" was checked to show
on the desktop but it still doesn't show up. If I got into internet options
under the 'advanced' tab "show internet explorer on the desktop" is NOT on
option like it is on other machines. How do I get that option back and get
the "Real" IE icon back on my desktop?

Right click a blank spot on the desktop and choose Properties | Desktop |
Customize Desktop.

Frank,
I've done that. The check box for IE is already checked. I've unchecked it,
saved it then came back and re-checked it and it still won't show up on the
desktop. One thing that does happen when I apply the "desktop customize"
settings is the desktop icons do seem to blink or flash for a second but the
IE icon doesn't show up. Is the appearance controlled in the registry any
where?

I found a fix for my problem:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/iedesktopshortcut.reg

I down loaded this registry tweak but I didn't run the tweak itself. I
opened it up in notepad and looked up the individual registry entries and
found one that didn't match and change that "one" entry and it seems to have
fixed my problem. The original IE icon is back on my desktop, when I right
click on it I get the "Internet Properties".
I wanted to know if all the entries were bad or just one of them. (I just
like to know!)
The registry entry that I changed was the last one on the list:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}\ShellFolder]
"Attributes"=dword:00000024 (mine read 00100024 so I changed the 1 to
a 0)
"HideFolderVerbs"=""
"WantsParseDisplayName"=""
"HideOnDesktopPerUser"=""
