IE6 crashes only when internet accessed

Got aDSL service from McLeod with Netopia modem and software
installed a new 10/100 network card
CD from Netopia didn't work connecting to the internet with server assigned
IPs, so got static ones, gateways, etc. setup.
-Using WIndows ME
could ping yahoo.com and ping espn.com
-PROBLEM: any time a browser is opened it crashes and wants to send a
message to IE support or Netscape (Mozilla is another browser loaded to see
if it fixed the problem)
- as SOON as DSL network and phone lines are disconnected, the browsers
will come up fine and just not find their home page
- McLeod is stumped, says to get adware and updated virus software
-I couldn't do a live update to Norton anti-virus via DSL
- I turn OFF Norton firewall but DID NOT yet deinstall
-PROBLEM: did the winipcfg to go back to PPP to resetup dialup connection
to existing ISP
-same wacky thing happens. when connecting to the internet, can't ping
yahoo.com, and browser windows immediately crashes

-Outlook Express with same Intergate settings doesn't see the server during
dialup w/DSL unplugged

Any suggestions in getting the DSL working?
I've got unlimited tech support for the ISP intergate.com (highly recommend
for $10), because I'd like to get her system back to working on dialup
awaiting a fix
* I have not YET tried to uninstall IE from MS ME. I also have the IE6 SP1
install disk.

MAIN GOAL IS TO GET DSL WORKING.

MS Send IE Error "Show Details":
AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6l.0.2800.1106
ModName: unknown ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 52545350

*9/24/04 Uninstalled Norton Firewall and AntiVirus. loaded AVG antivirus and
scanned disk finding no viruses.
*Tried removing the TCP/IP protocol and readding it!
*redid the dialup connnection, issue remains. Can't ping yahoo.com, but can
ping their server address.
* Turned off in IE: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced >
browsing...unchecked Enable 3rd part browser extensions and now browser
doesn't crash, but still won't go anywhere
*Ran an adaware program and it found Hotbar and two others but needed the
internet to uninstall them, so didn't work well.

Did you ever have AOL installed ? Had the same issue
myself with XP and it was only after I went back to a
restore point before AOL that I was able to get IE6
working again. Of course AOL tech said not them contact
Microsoft.
