IE6 can't access Windows Updates - works find surfing

I just upgraded my Toshiba Stalite Pro 440CDX laptop, 64K,
from Win98 to Win98SE. This I did from an Upgrade CD -
without instructions.

When I went to UPDATE the upgrade(there are 16 critical and
34 suggested updates for the SE I installed), the IE5.5
browser couldn't access them. It scaned my computer OK,
suggested the updates, but couldn't get past the "preparing
to download" dialog box. When I hit Cancel, an Iexplorer
error message appeared "This program has performed an
illegal operation and will be shut down."

Thinking it was a browser problem, I used Netscape to
downloaded IE6 and replaced the IE5.5. I still can't
access the updates. I can use my browser to access other
sites, but it won't work on the Microsoft Update site, nor
will it allow me to intall my wireless card (which was the
reason I upgraded to SE in the first place).

How can I correct the install of Win98SE or adjust the
browser to corredt these problems? Do you have any other
suggestions? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Peter

Go directly the Windows Update site
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Clear your cache. Delete all temporary internet files and cookies. Make
sure your system time and date is correct.

Alternative way to download Windows and other updates. Use Bigfix.
