IE6 appears corrupted - can I reinstall?

I'm running Windows XP Home with Service Pack 2 and IE6. About a month ago,
without changing any configuration, IE stopped bringing up the ISP dial-up
window when started. It also doesn't recognise an internet connection whether
I connect before or after starting IE. The opening window doesn't bring up my
home page (which is Google) of course because it doesn't know the internet is
there.

The menu bar on IE comes up and each menu selection opens its drop-down list
- however none of the options on any of the drop-down lists will work at all.

Eventually, out of frustration, I installed Mozilla Firefox as my browser
and this works fine - just the way IE used to and should do.

I think IE itself might have been corrupted somehow and I would like to try
reinstalling it - I have the original operating system CDs. The Windows
Add/Remove Programs option in Control Panel doesn't seem to physically remove
IE when it's told to uninstall it, so subsequent "reinstallation" just takes
me back to where I was without correcting the problem.

Is there a way (other than totally reinstalling the operating system which
I'm very reluctant to do) to force IE to physically reinstall or,
alternatively, can someone tell me if there are specific registry entries I
need to check and perhaps edit to correct the problem?

There is no uninstall in Add/Remove for IE in XP SP2
The option in Add/Remove/Windows Components
is exactly what it says, i.e. "Adds or removes access to Internet
Explorer from the Start menu and Desktop". It does not remove IE.
