IE6 and XP SP2- address issue

Ever since Home XP SP2 was installed I ahve the following issues with my
IE.

Clicking the down arrow on the address bar (to go to a previously visited
site) seems to lock the computer with the hour glass spinning endlessly
and have to use End Task.
I CAN type in the address of a website and it works. Except that I have
to type in the whole format, http://www.<site>.com. It will not name
resolve when typing in just <site>.com or even www.<site>.com.
In a cmd window it does resolve <site>.com or even www.<site>.com.
Firewall and pop-up blocker turned off doesn't seem to fix it.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Jake,

See my post below (by pinkoos). I, too, have the same problem with the
address bar hour glass issue.

Using Regedit, browse to the following registry key and make sure the noted
setting is correct:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoComplete]
"Append Completion"="yes"

also see the following values:

"Use AutoComplete"="yes"
"AutoSuggest"="no"
