IE works only in safe mode

Hey guys, I have a Compaq Presario which has given my family fits over the
past couple of years. I've had to reformat the computer 25 times or so
because the computer will begin to become very slow, and when the computer is
restarted Windows will not load back up.

Recently we got cable internet and I had a pretty rough time getting it to
work on this computer. Basically, Internet Explorer does not work at all
under the regular mode. No matter what page you try to load up, you get the
standard "page cannot be displayed" error message. However, when I'm in Safe
Mode for Networking, IE works fine. I downloaded a separate browser while in
Safe Mode, and that browser works fine in regular mode.

I'm not really sure what to do about it. I've reformatted the computer to
see if that would help out, but it didn't. IE 6 worked fine while we had a
dial-up connection, but is now not functional. Internet Explorer's inability
to run complicates other programs as well that depend on IE, such as AOL
Instant Messenger. I'm also unable to retrieve any Windows Updates. I'm
running Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6, I haven't changed any of the
computer's settings since I have reformatted it this time.

Thanks guys, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Bryan :)

If you are using Outlook Express for your emails, double check the
connection settings there as well, as those settings can also affect IE.

As you did have dial-up, have you changed all of your old dial-up settings
since getting the cable? Check the Proxy settings. Unless you really need
to have a proxy, those should all be unchecked:

Disable Proxy Settings
Tools>Internet Options> Connections tab> LAN Settings button
Under Proxy server, make sure the box there is unchecked
or...
Lan Settings- Proxy Server - Disable

Disable Automatic Proxy configuration

Go to Tools>Internet Options> Connections tab> LAN Settings button.
If you see proxy:8080 in "Use automatic configuration script" box, delete
it and uncheck all the boxes.

Then go to Start>Run and enter:

regsvr32 -u ahiehelp.dll

Then click "OK". Reboot to finish the procedure.

also....

Zone Alarm Pro can block access to Internet

If you have any 3rd party toolbars, such as Google, Yahoo or MSN, disable
them. If you have Yahoo Companion, uninstall it, it is known to cause
various problems.

Hope this helps.
