I started having the same problem earlier today. I spent
2 hours on the phone with the HP/Compaq technical support
people, who had me try innumerable things, all of which
did not work. When all had failed, they said the last
chance was to download and run a program
called "CWSHREDDER". Since I could get on the internet
via aol, the support person gave me the url to use, but I
kept getting a window saying the site had either moved or
did not exist. When I asked the support person if she was
positive the address was correct, she said it absolutely
was, and that since my pc wouldn't recognize it, that
meant my Internet Explorer was irreparably damaged and I
would have to do a complete system restore. I didn't want
to do that, as I would lose whatever data I didn't back up
before doing the restore, and would in any event lose all
programs that hadn't been originally on the pc.
Since, by this time I didn't have much confidence in
HP/Compaq support, I said goodbye to them and decided to
search for "CWSHREDDER" myself. It took about two minutes
to find a page saying that the program was now at a
different location. I went there (Merijn.org), found the
program, downloaded it in about 5 seconds and ran it. It
took about 30 seconds to run; it said it found some
problems in IE and corrected them. I then tried to open
IE, and it is working perfectly now. This may not work
for you, but I would try it. CWSHREDDER is a program that
basically cleans up IE. Hope you have luck.
