IE error when trying to open an excel document

When clicking on a link to a excel or word document on our sharepoint site I
get the message window popping up saying "Internet explorer has encountered a
problem and needs to close." and then theres buttons to Dubug, Send Error
Report or Dont Send.

I have tried reinstalling office and IE and have checked msconfig for any
unusaul programs theres no spyware or viruses of BHO's....

I am at a loss on how to fix this short of reinstalling windows from scratch.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

10/18/07 on this group. It's probably a file version mis-match. If no joy,
