Friday, IE stopped working. Dblclick the icon, the
hourglass displays for a second, then goes away.

Background:
i'm a techie, so don't start with "plug it in". I've done
a reinstall (upgrade) back to Home. I've removed and
reinstalled IE. I've virus checked it to death. NOTHING
was changed, HW or SW, when it stopped working. Used it
Friday evening. Went to dinner. Before bed, went to use
again. IE wouldn't launch.

bummer.

any help greatly appreciated. email reply if possible..

Internet Explorer repair is not an option for the version that shipped with
the XP OS in a clean or full install.

It may be an option in and upgrade install from a win9x OS in add/remove
programs.

Unchecking IE in the add/remove components in XP does not uninstall IE, it
only deletes the IE icons.

You can reinstall IE using the following command line in the run dialog:
rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
%windir%\Inf\ie.inf

The XP cd may be needed for a re-install of IE.

( watch the word wrap, there is a space between 132 and % )
