IE will not display websites

Hi,
This is a second attempt to get help from this newsgroup. Previous single reply
did not assist me.
I'm hoping some of you folks will be able to help me. Each time I open IE and
try a web address I get the 'page cannot be displayed' or dns error.

Four days ago I was hit with a trojan/adware/spyware. I have used the
following and managed to clean it up, or so I thought.

Adaware (latest version)
Spy bot SD (latest version)
Ewido security suite
Etrust antivirus V7
Hijackthis

I have Flushed DNS
used the WinsockXPfix
done a netsh int ip reset ,
done a regsvr32 re-register of the pertinent .dlls mentioned in other posts(the
only one that did not register was msjava.dll (unable to locate file))
I have reset IE to defaults, disabled third party add-ons.
I have done a repair instal of XP Home SP2..

I also use the Mozilla Firefox browser and that works fine. I am able to
connect to ISP for email and web pages via Firefox and Outlook Express. So I
don't think the problem is connection related.

I usually use Firefox as my default browser but I need IE to download updates
from Microsoft.

I am at my wits end trying to resolve this problem. I hope someone can help.

YOu said you reset IE to the default settings, does that include make sure
that the proxy server settings is off?

If you are refering to the Internet options - connections - LAN settings ,yes
the proxy settings are blank and not ticked.

is there anything set in "Dial-up and virtual Private Network settings",
make sure never dial is on. Also turn off ALL firewalls including the
windows firewall and see if you can go online. the firewall maybe blocking
IE.

Thanks for that, I switched off Zonealarm and that solved the problem. IE is
now working. Now I have to try and find out why Zonealarm was blocking it.
May have to re-install zonealarm.

I had a different problem that was solved by deleting the content.ie5
folder. Have you tried using internet explorer from a different user
account on the same PC? If it works with a different user account, it could
be that your content.ie5 folder has become corrupted. This is worth a shot:

To completely clear the browser cache, you need to delete the contents.ie5
folder that is found in C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files. The problem is that
one can only "see" this folder from a different user account. Apparently,
the index.dat file (found in the Content.ie5 folder) can become corrupted.
The whole folder needs to be deleted and then Windows re-creates it.

Here are the steps:

--log on as a different (administrator) user. If you don't have a different
user account, create one and assign it administrator priviliges.
Afterwards, you can delete this newly created account.

--Open Windows Explorer. Go to Tools>Folder Options>View and select "Show
hidden files and folders," click OK.

--Still in Windows Explorer, find C:\Documents and Settings\>>username of
account with the problem<<\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.ie5

--delete the Content.ie5 folder

--Reboot and logon as original user, check and see if internet explorer
works.

Hi Alby :)

Try the following. Perhaps it will help:

First…right click on the ZA Icon on the system tray, down by your clock, and
be sure that the "Stop all internent activity" is not checked.

Thanks to all who assisted. Zonealarm was blocking IE internet access.
This was fixed when I unistalled Zonealarm and then re-installed it. Everything

Hi Ileen,
The problem affected all users. As I said previously it was Zonealarm that
was the problem. After I shut it down IE came alive once more. Strangely
though it only affected IE and autoupdate for Microsoft updates, as I was still
getting emails/newsgroups thru Outlook Express and I could access websites via
Firefox browser.
It must have been a legacy from the malware problem I had.

cheers and thanks for your input,

Alby

Hi,
Yes I am aware of ZoneAlarm discussion forum but as I was unaware that the
problem was zonealarm related until one of the repliers mentioned it I
naturally assumed that the problem was IE browser related.

Thanks anyway,

Just an FYI on this if I may. Although OE is a part of IE, it can still
function properly even if IE is not working. I discovered this sometime
back when I was having a problem with an incomplete IE SP1 download install
on my WinME box and I used the IEradicator to completely uninstall IE. once
IE was totally uninstalled (which can not be done in XP), and even before I
did the WinME reinstall to reinstall the original IE5.5, I could still use
OE to make contact with those who were assisting me to continue receiving
their written instructions through the rest of the procedure. So, OE can
work on it's own even if IE is not working. However, it may depend on what
the problem is. This fact may tend to confuse some who are not aware of how
the two programs actually work.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jan,
Understood. However, the fact that Zonealarm only prevented IE from
accessing the Internet and had no effect on Firefox/OE has me scratching my
head. If Zonealarm had been reconfigured by the malware to 'stop all internet
activity' or even if I had done it inadvertantly myself and hadn't realised it,
surely that would have stopped Firefox and OE as well? A weird and unusual
situation?

cheers,
Alby

NOt sure but I think firefox and OE is in their exception list while IE is
not.

Remember I am not sure.

All,

Like Alby, I'm pulling my hair out. I have IE6.* install and Navigator 7.2.
Browsing/surfing works with Navigator. With IE, I can get to just about
every sites first page....but if i sign in e.g. AOL, Fidelity, BofA...the
next page can not be read/viewed. I'm a novice...how would i tell what
spyware stuff I have?

FYI I bought this pc from Dell 6 months ago and have not added any
software...just the vanilla dell box w/ XP
