IE stops responding when using navigation buttons

I noticed IE was taking considerably longer than usual to
surf through pages on the web. I found a patch on windows
updates that was supposed to fix it: "IE stops responding
when you use the navigation buttons in IE." The problem
is apparently due to "IE Navigation Sound." I loaded the
patch and it seemed to work for one or two searches, then
strarted getting hung up again. A new page will load but
everything freezes for 30 to 50 seconds before I can do
anything else. The only thing I have done recently was to
install java applets that usps.com required when I wanted
to get postage for some packages online. What gives?

There's a good possibility that this is being caused by a third-party
program (adware, spyware, parasite).
