IE still DOA - winsock ok

V

vic1967

Here is the network protocol (looks ok to me according to
description of what to look for) . running winsock test
said it passed...: any more ideas why IE refuses to open
sites off internet?... thanks for your continued eyes on
this. (Note - Firefox and email work fine). Prior posts
(winsock tests and other) were followed for cure. Yet still
IE is DOA.

After going through all the drills to reinstall, clean
winsocks, reprime the dll's and i can't tell you what all
else, the SIMPLE solution turned up hidden in an
experts-exchange.com discussion. "TURN OFF THE FIREWALL".
Actually before i ran the sp2 upgrade i had the firewall
turned off (norton internet security). But for some reason
I thought it was still off or at least unchanged. I don't
know why IE refuses to work with the firewall up, but in
any case it does with the firewall off. I am told my
network router (dsl) is a pretty good firewall in itself
(ihope). Well... at least i have one very very clean
system now. I flossed every file twice!
Thanks to all who came through with their suspected
solutions. Even though they did not do the trick, at least
it forced me to floss.

I can't tell you what happend with NIS that caused this effect, but I can
tell you that the Windows firewall wouldn't have a similar effect--and it is
worth running, even behind a router. It is true that the router will reject
packets not a part of an existing conversation from within the lan behind
the router.

However--even in a small network--one or two machines at home--does anyone
ever visit and bring a laptop? Might you allow them to plug in?

Defense in depth is a good strategy to practice, if the added complexity
doesn't become an issue. The Windows firewall adds very little complexity.

Glad you got it working.
