IE shutdown error window

Every time I shut down IE I get the message after
shutdown "Error Message: IE has encountered a
problem and needs to close" There is a check box which
asks whether IE is to be reopened and whether an error
report should be sent.
This is a known problem but the solutions in Microsoft
documents do not seem to help.
Must IE be uninstalled and reinstalled and where does the
copy for reinstallation come from?
If I uninstall will all f=relevant files on the C disk be
lost?
