msn maps and mcafee

F

Frank

Windows XP Pro
IE 6 w/SP3
Mcafee Security Center

MSN maps display but trying to navigate causes IE to close with an "IE has
encountered a problem..." error.

Google maps work fine.
Mapquest maps work fine.

I suspect mcafee is to blame because problem started with an uninstall &
reinstall of Mcafee. Mcafee no help at all; they're a useless waste of time.

Uninstalling mcafee solves problem but obviously this is a less than perfect
solution.

Any ideas? (Java? ActiveX? Not even sure what these are to be honest)

Was McAfee Security Center application running in the background when you
installed WinXP SP3?

What (other) third-party toolbars are installed (e.g., Google; Yahoo;
Windows Live/MSN)?

If you're certain McAfee's causing the behavior, try the following:

1. Uninstall the McAfee Security Center via Add/Remove Programs.

TIP: Uninstall any/all third-party toolbars before uninstalling McAfee
Security Center.

2. Download/run this removal tool:

3. IMPORTANT! => Reboot.

4. Reinstall McAfee Security Center.

PA Bear,
Thanks for responding...

Yes, I'm sure Mcafee was running - it has been there for years.
SP3 came via Auto Updates, I guess...I don't remember installing it.
Google toolbar was installed but I have since removed it. (By disabling in
"Manage ad-ons" as a part of this whole nightmare.)

I've already done all that you suggested but I'll try again paying
particular attention to the order you have given.

I believe, by the way, that I have isolated the problem to the Mcafee
firewall. By disabling it and enabling the Windows Firewall the maps seem to
work.

Does that make any sense?
And why do Mapquest maps and Google maps work but not MSN?

Oh well, I'll play with it some more tonight or tomorrow afternoon & post a
follow-up.

Thanks again,

Frank

YW & thanks for your feedback.

Don't just disable Google Toolbar, uninstall it. It might not be compatible
with the McAfee toolbar.

If you ran the removal tool after uninstalling McAfee Security Center but
before reinstalling it, no need to do it again. (Your last post suggests
you hadn't.)
And why do Mapquest maps and Google maps work but not MSN?

Dunno. Perhaps something in McAfee Security Center (e.g., firewall; Site
Advisor) doesn't like the ads?
