I have a Compaq Tablet PC and have developed performance
problems with IE 6 that came installed with my computer. I
have regularly installed all of the Windows XP and IE
service packs, patches as they become available.
Every time I run IE, disk access is so intense that IE
response time slows incredibly. The slow response time has
rendered IE ineffective for use as an Internet browser.
And when I say slow response time, I mean things like a
significant lag time between the time I click on an IE
command button and the point when IE realizes a button has
been clicked and tries to execute the command. I've
downloaded and installed Mozilla and don't have any of the
same symptoms.
I contacted Compaq (HP) tech support. They suggested I do
a virus scan. Since I've always used McAfee and kept it
up-to-date, I was skeptical about this, but did it anyway.
No viruses found. Then HP suggested I undock the Tablet
(so as to disconnect all peripherals), which I did, but
still get the same heavy disk access and slow response time
from IE. They're saying it's a Microsoft problem, not a
hardware problem.
I thought maybe I could correct whatever is wrong by
re-installing IE, so I downloaded and ran ie6setup.exe, but
I don't think it did a re-install. I think setup just
determined I already had IE 6 installed and promptly
terminated itself because it never downloaded anything
more, and never prompted me to restart the computer.
Although using Mozilla solves the Internet browser problem,
the whole poor IE performance thing is bugging me, and I'd
rather not use Mozilla on my home computer and still use IE
on my other 2 computers at work. Switching between
computers is much easier (less confusing) if I'm using the
same software on all of them.
