Matthew

I haven't been able to open IE on Windows XP for a few days
now. It says that "IE has encountered a problem and needs
to close."
I did everything I possibly knew of to fix it. I installed
all the windows updates and it didn't fix the problem.
I tried uninstalling the program through the control panel
and then re-installing it from the microsoft web site and
it says "A newer version of this program already exists on
this computer," even though I have uninstalled it already.
My problem is similar to what others have posted except
when i click on the "Click Here" on the error message the
values are -
AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2600.0 ModName: winshow.dll
ModVer: 1.0.0.11 Offset: 0000c95e
Please help.
Thank you

I also have experienced this same problem within the last few days. I am wondering if it may be a virus or worm. I have a cable modem so it is always on. Let me know if you find anything out and I will do the same.

Matthew,
This is probably being caused by one or more parasite programs.
Download and run run CWShredder from
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip
CWShredder is only about 125 KB so it could be downloaded from another
machine onto a floppy disk if necessary. If winshow is your only problem,
CWShredder will remove it.

If CWShredder isn't the cure, try Ad-aware and Spybot S&D:

Also note the security tips on that page.

And, not that it would have prevented this, but, you're running a firewall,
right?
