IE Memory Leak?

I shouldn't have this symptom because I have sp1 installed and I'm running IE
v6.00.28 (at least according to Add/Remove Programs and IE Help screen). But
I do! When I reboot and check resources, then open IE, resources drop by more
than 10%. When I close out IE, resources may go back up by 1-3% at most.
Running Windows ME with all updates (according to microsoft scan).

Is there any chance Microsoft's update programs could be confused in
thinking my system is up-to-date when it's not? I try installing all the
patches over again and the install is stopped when it says I'm already
up-to-date. There was a point when my IE got so corrupt, I had to restore IE
back to 5.0 (using Add/Remove Programs), but I reinstalled SP1 after that and
confirmed through help screen,etc.

I'm scratching my head here. Can anyone shed some light?

P.S. I'm clean of spyware, but I recently started having another symptom
where system resources start at 45% now. Bare bones are loaded, but I
recently installed new memory sticks. If I installed ECC vs NON-ECC (I'm
trying to sort out why Dell site said I needed ECC, but old sticks turned out
to be NON-ECC), could this cause memory leaks and low initial system
resources?

Windows ME is really poor. I suggest you downgrade to 98SE. I hope someone
else can help you better. Have a nice day!

I know Windows ME is a real dog, but I was getting by fine until this recent
memory issue. Next step is going to be to format and go to Windows XP, but I
don't have time to transfer all my Quicken and other stuff right now. Would
really like to know what could be the recent culprit here. I have 512 memory
and yet upon boot I'm at 45% and IE drags it down to 32% on first open/close.

I have an OEM install of Windows ME. MS Internet Explorer is reported to be
current. The following shows up in my MSIE Help About list:

Microsoft Internet Explorer

Version: 6.0.2800.1106
Update Versions:; SP1; Q324929; Q810847; Q328389;
Q813951; Q813489; Q330994; Q818529; Q822925;
Q828750; Q824145; Q832894; Q837009; Q831167;
Q823353; Q867801; Q833989; Q834707; Q889293;
Q887797; Q867282; Q891781;

This computer starts with 77% free resources, drops to 75% when MSIE opens,
and goes back to 77% when MSIE closes.

For those who wonder, I can free up more resources by shutting down some
start up applications. If I needed it, I could approach 82%, maybe a tad
more. But things are working fine as they are, and I have rarely encountered
a low resource condition; usually after running for over 48 hours, with some
heavy windows opening.

It could be. Jack E Martinelli sent me to this site:

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

The program shows a list of MSFT hotfixes (among other useful data), and
whether they are functional, or broken. I saw one of the hotfixes show up as
broken, even though the MS Windows Update site said it was ok. Well,
actually two; but reinstalling the older one appears to have fixed them
both.

Not any more than I have already done.

I don't know about the memory issue. I have a cheap stick of 128 MByte RAM.
I also had a serious overheating because the power supply fan died. I
sometimes suspect the random flakiness I have seen since replacing the power
supply is because the overheating damaged the RAM.

In my experience, Windows ME is no more crash prone than Windows 98SE.
Possibly a little slower; but I have seen differences in perceived speed on
computers with identical OS and hardware. I suspect the bigger factor in
perception is with the mix of customer added applications, and the way that
they interact with the OS, and each other.
