WTC said:The IE Icon is normal everywhere except my own user profile desktop.
Even
on
taskbar and in start menu on my profile it is normal. Only the desktop
icon
is corrupted and only on my profile.
I would suggest to create a new user profile then copy your old profile
to
the new profile. Once that is completed and you are happy with your new
profile, then delete the old profile.
How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811151
In the subsection "Copy Files to the New User Profile", MS has the first
step incorrect. The first step, you should log onto the new profile to
create the new directory profile for the new user then log off. Once you
completed this satep, then you can start from step 1.

What happens if you create a temporary new user profile or log into
another
account? Is the IE Icon normal or looks corrupted?

and it did, for a day and a half. go figure. anyway, I have
decided
to
just
delete the icon off my desktop as it bothers me so much. I will
just
learn
to use the link on my task bar. Thanks again SOOO much for your
help.
:
You're welcome bjhomer.
I believe the shell32.dll file **may** have been corrupted. I am
not
certain about this, but when you logged back in, Windows **may**
have
copied
the shell32.dll file to the System32 folder since you could not do
this
before because the file was **probably** in use. Hopefully the Icon
will
retain itself now.

ok, this is weird.... the computer went idle, and when i logged
back
onto
my
account, my blue "E" was back! *crossing my fingers* that this
time
it
will
stick!! If it does, thank you SOOOO much!! If it doesn't, I will
just
message you again, if that's ok! But here's hopin'!!!
:
What happens if you type the following line in the command
prompt
(START
RUN > CMD.EXE):
copy "%windir%\system32\dllcache\shell32.dll"
"%windir%\system32\shell32.dll" (all one line)
or if you installed Service Pack 2.
copy "%windir%\ServicePackFiles\i386\shell32.dll"
"%windir%\system32\shell32.dll" (all one line)
Then refresh the desktop.

ok, tried that... nothing changed... however, this is odd...
after i
did
that
I tried once again to go to Control Panel, Display, Desktop,
and
then
Customize Desktop, where I first removed the IE desktop icon
and
then
put
it
back. Still the same silly icon. Then, I decided to try to
change
the
My
Computer Icon to the usual blue "E" just to see what would
happen...
I
chose
Change Icon and found the blue "E" and changed it, and the My
Computer
Icon
immediately became the aforementioned silly icon. NOT the
blue
"E"
that I
chose. So what is that about???? Of course, I put it right
back
with
no
problems. You are trying so hard to help me, and I really
appreciate
it.
Please don't give up on me yet!!
:
See if this will fix your Icon problem. Download the file and
import
into
the registry by running the file. You can view the contents
of
the
file
by
saving to desktop and then right-click on the file and select
edit.
http://www.lprf.ca/files/ie_icon.reg
After running the registration file, refresh the desktop.

rebooting did nothing, also it is interesting to note that
the
IE
icon
is
messed up only on my account. the other accounts still
have
the
original
blue "E" icon.

yeah, tried that already... works for every other icon
EXCEPT
for
the
IE...
the "change icon" option isn't even there for the IE...
Any
other
ideas?
See if this registry location is correct:
[HKCR\CLSID\{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}\DefaultIcon]
Name: (Default)
Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ
Value: shdoclc.dll,-190
-----
Then go to these two locations,
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID\{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}]
and
[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID\{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}]
If there is a key called "DefaultIcon" key, then delete
the
key
"DefaultIcon". If the "DefaultIcon is present in these
registration
locations will override the HKCR registration reference.

This registration reference will also override the HKCR
registration
