i don't know what happened, but all of a sudden my IE icon is not the blue
"E" anymore... I have tried everything, including uninistalling IE and
reinstalling... that worked once but only for about 30 mins. then it
reverted back to this silly generic icon. Help?

Right click on the silly icon and go down to Properties. Click and choose
Change icon. You should be able to find the icon you want and select it .
All should then be well.

Sorry, but an individual reply goes into my spam filter

yeah, tried that already... works for every other icon EXCEPT for the IE...
the "change icon" option isn't even there for the IE... Any other ideas?

btw, i have also tried changing themes(only changes recycle bin icon),
restoring to previous config(4 times in a row, 4 diff dates, said that could
not be restored and instructed me to pick a diff date), all subsequent
uninstall and reinstall of IE doesn't change the icon anymore(only worked
briefly the first time), uninstalled various games and programs to no avail,
and removed several start menu programs to manual start only instead of
starte when windows loads... I really am at a loss.

See if this registry location is correct:

[HKCR\CLSID\{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}\DefaultIcon]
Name: (Default)
Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ
Value: shdoclc.dll,-190

-----

Then go to these two locations,

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID\{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}]
and
[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID\{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}]

If there is a key called "DefaultIcon" key, then delete the key
"DefaultIcon". If the "DefaultIcon is present in these registration
locations will override the HKCR registration reference.

------

Also see if this registry location is correct::

HKLM\Software\Classes\CLSID\{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}\DefaultIcon]
Name: (Default)
Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ
Value: shdoclc.dll,-190

This registration reference will also override the HKCR registration
reference.

ok, first, thank you so much!! second, the first registry was correct, the
second was correct, the third does not exist on my computer, and the fourth
had Type: REG_SZ instead of REG_EXPAND_SZ, I don't know how to change that,
and the Value was (no value set) so I changed it to shdoclc.dll,-190. The
icon has not changed yet, but i am going to reboot and see if it makes a
diff. Anyway, why don't i have a CLSID file under
[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ and how do I
change the type on the last registry?

ok, tried that... nothing changed... however, this is odd... after i did that
I tried once again to go to Control Panel, Display, Desktop, and then
Customize Desktop, where I first removed the IE desktop icon and then put it
back. Still the same silly icon. Then, I decided to try to change the My
Computer Icon to the usual blue "E" just to see what would happen... I chose
Change Icon and found the blue "E" and changed it, and the My Computer Icon
immediately became the aforementioned silly icon. NOT the blue "E" that I
chose. So what is that about???? Of course, I put it right back with no
problems. You are trying so hard to help me, and I really appreciate it.
Please don't give up on me yet!!

You're welcome bjhomer.

I believe the shell32.dll file **may** have been corrupted. I am not
certain about this, but when you logged back in, Windows **may** have copied
the shell32.dll file to the System32 folder since you could not do this
before because the file was **probably** in use. Hopefully the Icon will
retain itself now.
