How can you stop this happening

Never turn your computer on.

Besides Internet Explorer, Help and Support and other programs like Outlook
Express place files in Temporary Internet Files.
and clear them away safely

To delete *all* Temporary Internet Files...

1) Start | Run | Type: inetcpl.cpl | Click OK
Or right click the Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop
Or Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options
Best to do this with all instances of Internet Explorer closed. Especially
if there are a large number of files. Also close OE.
2) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
3) Check the box Delete all offline content {This cleans >>
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
AND
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
and \Content.MSO (Created by an MS Office program)}
4) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the
temporary internet files
5) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that
websites have placed on your hard drive.
6) You can also click on the Clear History button to empty your History
folder.

If you want, try this: Open IE | Tools | Internet Options | Advanced tab |
scroll down to the bottom | check: Empty Temporary Internet Files folder
when browser is closed | click Apply | OK. Entirely up to you, but if you
want to be rid of this, it is done automatically. Deletes the content of
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files but not the Content.IE5 or Content.MSO folders.

Also: Start IE | Tools | Internet Options | General tab | Days to keep
pages in history: 0 | Apply | OK.

let me try to explain more clearly.

On our SP2 system IE History and TIF is @
c:\Documents and Settings\'user'\Local Settings\

After I installed Office, we got the well known 'debug' problem [because
'Disable Script Debugging (Other)' was unticked in IE advanced internet
options I discovered.] When I fixed that we got empty duplicates of IE
History & TIF in both C:\windows\temp and ..\Local Settings\temp

Unlike the original History and TIF folders, the duplicates have
subfolders like History.IE5 and Content.IE5 - and Content.IE5 has four
subfolders 34FR3A6Z 38FYNRAE 868ST7AZ and PO70HGL8 and four different
subfolders within c:\windows\temp These seem to do nothing, but I can't
delete them so they seem sort of system files.

I tried to find this in the registry, but I have no idea what to look
for. I think these are traces from how IE worked in earlier versions of
Windows. Any help please?

Hi, and thanks for any help you can give.

Why have so many redundant folders?

You missed 2 points...
Firstly the extra folders I mentioned were only created AFTER the
computer suffered a mild crash, and secondly I said that they were
created inside TEMP directories. None of the paths you give include TEMP
directories.

This kind of thing has happened on other Windows systems, and I want to
know how to stop it repeating if possible and how to safely remove the
rogue directories.

Thanks
Luke
