IE has encountered a problem and needs to close....

IE will not open for me. I get the error message listed in
the subject like of this post and then another error
message saying this program has performed and illegal
operation and will be shut down. Details of this are:

IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 017f:bff7a388

The browser window never opens - all I see are the error
messages. Any help on what I need to do to fix this would
be appreciated.

From Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced uncheck "Enable third party
browser extensions." That should allow IE to open.

Run CWShredder from http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html It's been
the most helpful with this problem. It may be the only cleanup program you
need this time. CWShredder is only about 125 KB so it could be downloaded
from another machine onto a floppy disk.

Search for and remove other malware and note the security tips at:
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

You should re-enable browser extensions after the cleanup.

Or...
A legitimate program running in the background may be causing this. Disable
(for diagnostic purposes) programs such as pop-up blockers, security,
anti-virus, etc. Also... notorious for causing problems- Gator, Kazaa and
some others.

There are other possibilities for KERNEL32 errors:
