IE going nowhere first Windows session each day

The first time that I boot up Windows each day Internet Explorer will start
but never get to display the home page. The task manager says that it is
running but nothing happens. If I restart Windows IE runs normally, and does
so every time I start Windows that day. But next day - the same problem. I
first had this problem with IE6 and so I installed IE7. But same problem. I
am using XP Pro with Service Pack 2. Surely this is impossible...

How long are you waiting before starting IE?

If your modem is turning on at the same time your computer is, it may not
have enough time to complete its hanshaking with the server, preventing IE
from finding anything.
