IE favorites folder

D

Dave Berlinger

Hi Everyone

Can anyone help me use and understand the favorites folder in IE 6 more
efficiently?

It's much more cumbersome than the one in Netscape in that in IE when you ad
a favorite site either to your main list or to a folder, there doesn't seem
to be any rhyme or reason for where in that list it will be placed.

Editing the favorites folder is difficult. You can't see much and even
though I know you can expand the box that comes up when you click "organize",
it seems hard to see everything.

Rather than going on, I wonder, does anyone know of a substitute application
that we can use instead of the favorites folder? Something that perhaps
integrates into IE just like the favorites folder? Or am I dreaming?

thanks

Hi Dave :)

There are, of course, all types of 3rd party Favorites programs that can be
found on the Internet, some free - some to buy. You might try the
information below and see if it helps:

How do I bookmark a site that I want to return to?

Ahphabatize My Favorites

Sorting Internet Explorer 6.0 Favorites In Alphabetical Order:

Sort favorites automatically on-the-fly (Windows 2000/XP)
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/IEFAQ.htm

or....

Use the menu option Favorites and when a favorite flies out,
rightclick on it and select "Sort by name"
Don't use the Favorites panel. It must be the menu option or you may
also do it from Start-Favorites

or..........

Expand Favorites Menu

IE-Tools-Internet Options-Advanced
The option is "Enable Personalized Favorites Menu"
Uncheck it.

You need to get a program called FavOrg 1.4 here:

http://www.gratilog.net/anglais/internet/favorg.zip
http://uk.geocities.com/personel44/files/favorg.zip

or Version 1.2 here:

http://www.liemar.com.br/construindoseusite/downloads/favorg.zip
http://www.themes.myqth.com/Downloads/favorg.zip

(still free at these links) which will allow you to save them permanently
in a different folder and re-associate your favorites with the stored icons.
(It will also verify whether your links in Favorites are stll good, BTW.)

If you want to read more about it first, go here:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,9883,00.asp

Favicons are only temporary until cleared from your cache. To set them to be
permanent do the following:
FavOrg-PCMag:

Show All Items on the Start Menu or Favorites Menu

or

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Dear Alan, sorry, how do you "manipulate it in Explorer?" Right-clicking
bookmark.htm in Windows Explorer gives you a choice of Microsoft FrontPage,
Word, Excel,.. . most of which require one to know/use HTML except for
FrontPage which allows minimalist cutting and pasting. was this the
manipulation you meant?
Thank you! Richard Chiang Pan, Washington, DC, I just posted a lengthy
question "How to merge Favorites .htm files" could you possibly help out?
thank you ever so much! how come Microsoft XP's config options for Favorites
is so meager?

Dear Alan, sorry, what did you mean "manipulate it in Explorer?
Right-clicking bookmark.htm in Windows Explorer gives you a choice of
Microsoft FrontPage, Word, Excel,... to open the list, most of which require
you to use HTML( which i don't at all) except for FrontPage and Dreamweaver
also, i believe. FrontPage and Dreamweaver allow minimalist cutting and
pasting, etc. were there other ways to manipulate Favorites? Thank you!
Richard Chiang Pan, WAshington, DC, I just posted a "How to merge Favorites
..htm files?" question. Could you possibly help out? I really want to figure
out a way to merge .htm files, keep non-alphabetical orders. Thank you ever
so much!

Dear jan, could you possibly help out with my 3/6/2005 posting "How to merge
Favorites .htm files?" at Microsoft IE6 General questions? your original
answer compels me to ask for help! thank you ever so much. Richard Chiang

My response was nothing to do with bookmark.htm
No, that is not the manipulation I meant.
It was concerned with the Favorites folder, which is much easy to
manipulate in Windows Explorer.

Yes, I saw your question but at the time, I decided there were too
many questions there. I will have another look after a few hours
sleep. (3:30 a.m. here)

I can't answer your question on XP as I have never used it.

Hi Rich :)

First, do you have access to the Favorites folders containing the Favorites
ou want to merge?

The Wizard has not always worked well for me, and I got tired of spending
time troubleshooting and trying to no avail. So, I tried an off the cuff,
sort of backdoor, out-of-the-box approach which worked for me. It may not
work for you, but, you might try it.

Make a backup copy of each of the Favorites folders that you want to merge.
I went through and sorted out any links that I did not want, then created a
new Folder called Favorites1. Then I simply copied the files from each of
the Favorites folders backup copies into the new Favorites1 folder. Then I
copied the Favorites1 folder to a floppy (or a CD if necessary).

Then I went to the folder, drive or machine I wanted the merged Favorites on
and simply copied the new Favorites1 folder files to the necessary Favorites
folder there. Or, I renamed the existing Favorites to Favorites_OLD, copied
the Favorites1 folder to the same folder, then renamed the folder Favorites.
Then I rebooted (not necessary I don't guess, I just like to start with a
clean slate to avoid any confusion), went into IE, opened the Favorites
and..... Voila! They were all there.

A good thing to remember about Favorites; they're only files, and they're
in a regular folder, therefore, there are no Registry or other issues to
worry about. So...there' should be no problem with simply copying the
contents of the Favorites folder from one PC to another. Thus, you can copy
all the Favorites files into one folder and you have your merged Favorites
to put anywhere you like. :)

However, if you don't have access to the original Favorites folders, and
have to work simply from the Wizard created backups, then there may be more
work involved.

Hope this helps :)

Dear Jan, thank you for so meticulously thorough an answer. a couple of fast
mentions, though - when you copy and paste one folder's contents into
another, the order of each is totally scrambled with the other... so if you
intentionally want nonalphabetical orders of Favorites, which is very helpful
for me, your folder copy method destroys all original order.
Appending is also a problem. Registry Keys are said to be the way to
specify original orders, though how appending is done is not clear.
Last, I believe some of your steps...renaming Favorites Favorites_Old and
later back.. are unnecessarily redundant. But thank you for incredible
patience in explaining it all! I would gladly nominate you for special
recognition! Again, my gratitude! Richard Chiang Pan, Washington, DC

You're very welcome! I've lost a good deal of data at times due to simple
errors, and some due to machine glitches. Thus, I have learned to be very
careful about protecting my data at all times. By making a backup and such,
it gives me an original batch of data to fall back on should I trip along
the way or something go thump in the night. ;o)

Thank you for your kind words, and I hope you will be able to find a method
that will fill your needs. :)
