ie favorites disappeared ,contents of windows folder in favorites window

My 'favorites' or bookmarks were replaced in IE 6 by the
contents of my windows folder on the c drive. If I delete
one of the favorites, I am deleting the item from my
windows folder.

How can I undo this and get back to my original favorites
or just start clean.

The Registry setting appears to have been corrupted.

You can change the value of Favorites in the Registry in these
two keys: (ignore the second if the value is not there)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders
