IE Explorer 6.0 Locking Up On A Web Page Account

S

Sandgroper

Hi people ,

I have a problem with a friend's IE 6.0 when it is accessing a user account
on a web page , the account is not a secure https web site , but just a
standard http user account.
The specs for the system is a 2.8 Ghz machine running XP Home with I think ,
SP1 as well as IE 6.0 .

There is no problems whatsoever with general web browsing to any web site ,
BUT as soon as the person logs into one particular web page account , you
can navigate around the site for up to 10 minutes and then IE 6.0 locks up ,
you can't even use the back buttons to get to a previous page and clicking
on any of the links do not work and most of the time the only way of getting
out of it is to shut down IE.
Sometimes you can manage to log out , but if you try to log back in or to do
any other web browsing , you can't and you have to close down IE and start
it up again to get it to work properly.

There has been never been a problem with any type of lock up on this system
at any time until this person started accessing this particular web page and
setting up a user account and accessing it.
There has been no new programs installed on the system for quite awhile.

The thing is that if you go to this web site and browse through the site ,
doing searches or whatever without logging in , then there is no problem ,
the problem only exists when this person logs into their user account on
that particular web site.

I have tried quite a few things to find out what the problem could be , I
have :

1) Disabled the firewall ,
2) Checked out the IE settings , which are set to default settings.
3) Reset the Privacy Settings to Medium to allow first and third party
cookies.
( the web site said to allow first and third party cookies )
4) Have set to allow cookies for this web site.
5 ) Checked if Java script and activeX is enabled

I have done a number of tracerts to the web site and it seems to me that one
of their servers times out , but I can't be sure because it could appear
that the anonymous browsing and user accounts may be on different servers
and if this was the case then even if you tried to log out of the system ,
once out of there , normal web browsing should return , but it doesn't.

So I am thinking that there could be some type of script or keep alive
script that is causing a conflict somewhere and locking up IE 6.0

I realise that one of the suggestions would be to update the system to SP2 ,
but the person is on a dial-up account and is fairly computer illiterate and
I can't arrange the time needed to do the SP2 update.

So can anybody tell me what could be the problem and how it could be fixed.

Thanks.

Thanks very much for your help .

I will print out your instructions and implement them the next time I go to
see my friend and get access to his computer.
With the run commands , will these be OK to run in a batch file ? , I am not
sure , because it has been a long time since I have used any batch files and
I haven't run any batch files on a XP system before. ( I used to be fairly
good with batch files under DOS/Win95 )

The time sync setting has not been set , I live in Perth West Australia ,
which has just introduced daylight saving all in the space of 3 months , MS
have produced a patch for the daylight saving adjustment and I have
installed it on my friends machine , but I have done nothing about syncing
the time.

I have one of the first XP SP2 CDs when they were first introduced , do you
think that this CD would be still OK to use ? and would I need to do the SP2
upgrade before or after implementing the workaround you have mentioned ?

Thanks.

Yes, you can Run it as a batch file (.bat), to do that open a Notepad and
Copy those command and save as reg.bat on a floppy or CD which option is
installed on your friends machine?.
But remember to type them correct or otherwise you will get error and you
don't know the exact problem, meaning the space between the
regsvr32_urlmon.dll for example, so be careful to check all correct before
saving.
Try this first, then if still no joy yes try the CD SP2 you have, it should
work and upgrade the system to better protection files than the SP1 which on
now.

OK , that sounds good , I will set the commands up in a .bat file so that I
don't make any mistakes with the commands and it will also be quicker to
run.
I wasn't too sure if I could run regsvr32 in a .bat file in the console or
in a windows environment.

When I get access to my friends machine I will first check and confirm
whether SP1 or SP2 is installed on the machine , if it's SP1 , then I will
run through the instructions that you have given me and if it doesn't work ,
I will install the SP2.

If SP2 is installed on the machine , I will still try the workaround as you
have mentioned.

From memory , the SP2 CD contains 100 Mb of updates which would take a
fairly long time to download on a dial-up account , so hopefully I could use
the SP2 CD and then after the update , do some more updates off the MS web
site that will be a lot less than a100 Mb download.

Once again , thank you very much for all your help.

Hopefully I will be able to get access to my friends machine within the next
2 - 3 days and I will let you know of the outcome.

Thanks

:)

Hi nass
I went and checked out my friend's machine today , it does have the SP2
installed , so what I did was :

a) checked and fixed the IE settings of :

[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third- Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
Under :
[&] Security
[ ] Use SSL 2.0 Check this box
[ ] Use SSL 3.0 Check this box
[ ] Use TLS 1.0 Check this Box

b) Checked \windows\system32\driver\etc\host file
There was no entry for the particular web site that is causing the
problem

c) Flushed the resolver dns
Using ipconfig /flushdns

The problem of IE locking up / not working when in the user account is still
there , but IE seems to work a bit better.

What is happening now is that IE is working fine in the user account , but
if you leave the user account idle for more than a few minutes , it tends to
become unworkable and unable to use either the back/forward button or be
able to click on any of the links as if it is unable to resolve any IP
addresses ... etc

The only way to fix the problem is to shut down IE and then open it up
again.

I haven't run the regsvr32 commands that you mentioned , I though I would
ask you if would know of what is happening to the user account and IE before
I implement the commands.

Have you got any idea what is happening ?

Thanks.

Hi Steve,
1- Try this On the IE Pahe when open click onn Tools >> Internet Options.
On the IE Properties click on Connections Tab, and click on the Default
connection under Dial-Up and Virtual Network settings:
AustrliaCom say for Example then click Settings Button.
On the Settings window click on Advanced under Properties beside the User
name and Password, there you will find an Option called Idle set this to
Zero
or Higher number, prefered Zero, while there click on General Tab then
click
Settings and click on View Files try to set the size of the Temp to
something
between 50-80 MBs you may find it 570 or 280 or something in that range
son
lower or reduce it to 50-80 MBs.
Go to the device Manager and see the mode there and right click it or
highlight it and click Properties button, click on the powermanagement and
be
sure the option for Let the computer Turn OFF this device for Power saving
is
not checked.

2- Then Try to Run this Regs of DLLs adding to them this; netsh winsock
reset and Reboot.

3- If the above didn't help, try to delete the index.dat where?, in this
path:
C:\documents and settings\Sandgroper\cookies = look in the Right you will
find index.dat delete that, the same under the History in this path:
C:\Windows\System32\Temp\TempraryInternetFiles = clear the Sub folders
under
this Tem Internet files and delete the index.dat then Reboot the machine
and
the Operating system will create new index.dat for you.
If the Index.dat is corrupt it can cause this issue, the same of the Temp
is
corrupt too.
If not try to run this command : sfc /scannow but leave it until last.
Be sure this machine is clean from malwares to be able to work inthe right
direction of troubleshooting this issue.

Hi nass

Thank you for your detailed response to my post.
I will print out and implement the instructions that you have mentioned
within the next day or 2 when I get access to my friend's computer again.

I really can't understand why my friend's machine is having so much trouble
with this web site , the machine has had very little use , has not done very
wide ranging web browsing and has not had very many new programs installed
on it and have checked for malware using Ad-aWare & Spybot Search & Destroy
, perhaps somebody has messed around with some the IE settings too much and
has changed some simple but important settings.

I know that the Temp file settings is set to 200 Mb , the modem in an
internal one that was installed by a computer shop after there was a problem
with the external hardware modem.
The modem is stable and connects between 45.2 - 46.6 K and there has never
been a problem with it.

The web site user account is a fairly commercial dating site that is used by
quite a lot of people , so this web site should be fairly good and should
not be causing any problems to users.

Anyway I will run through your above instructions , run the regs of DLLs and
then at the end I will add the command :

netsh winsock

Then I will reboot the system and see how it goes.

I will let you know about the results.

Once again , thank you for all your help.

:)

Hi Steve,
1- Try this On the IE Pahe when open click onn Tools >> Internet Options.

Hi nass ,

I have checked the IE/dial-up settings you mentioned and implemented all
the suggestion you have mentioned up to running netsh windsock command and I
have found that when the user is logged on the web site in the user account
, everything seems work a bit faster and things seem to be a more responsive
when clicking on the links.
However , the problem of IE becoming unresponsive after leaving it idle for
about 5 minutes still persists and IE has to be shutdown and start up again
to fix the problem.

I tried to implement the last part of you suggestion of deleting the
index.dat file in C:\documents and settings\<username>\cookies and I
couldn't , I kept getting the error message of " Unable to delete index.dat
, another program is using this file ..... etc"

From what I have read after doing a google search , it looks like I will
have to create a new administrator account and then go into the folder to
that particular user and then delete the index.dat file.

Once I can delete the index.dat file , I will complete the rest of your
instructions and I will post back the results.

Sorry to be a bit of a pain about dragging out this problem , but it's one
of those things that bug me and I have to follow it through to the end and
fix the problem.

Once again , thanks for responding to my posts.

Hi Steve,
The command is netsh winsock reset

Hi nass ,
Thanks , I will try that running that command again , it didn't work when I
did it before , I though I may have mispelt winsock.
Did you tried to see if the Modem has the feature of turning OFF if Idle
to
save Power is unchecked.

The Disconnect If Idle setting was unchecked , the Disconnect When
Connection May No Longer Be Needed was checked , so I uncheck it.

I should mention that when IE becomes non functional on this web site ,
there is still a connection to the ISP , all that needs to be done is to
shutdown IE and then start it up again and every thing is working good .

I had turned the firewall off after the first attempt to fix this problem
and today after I did all the changes you suggested , I turned the firewall
back on and there is no problems with it when logging into the user account
on that web site.

I can understand that you are attempting to do basic connection diagnostics
first to see if there is some basic problem with the dial-up connection.
:)
Go to the Device manager and locate the Modem and Right click it or Click
properties while you highlighted the modem and there uncheck the Let the
computer turn OFF this device for Power saving.

Have done that , both options were unchecked
Another is the Power Supply or power management have this Option too so
turn
it OFF, to do that Right Click Desktop, select Properties. ..
On the Display properties click Screensaver if there is On resume show
welcome screen uncheck this Box (Sorry I don't have my XP machine to give
you
the exact Steps) also if there is a power option there click on the
settings
button or the advance one and go through the power schemes and you will
see
the options which you can change to not put this machine in idle Mode like
the HDD Turn OFF set this to Never, Monitor set this to 15 Minutes or
Higher, and the System standby to never.

OK I will check all the power and power management settings and screensaver
, I think that they should be OK.
Also try to assign this site in the trusted Site on the IE properties
under
security and Privacy Tabs and see if the Issue will resolve.

OK , I will assign the web site as a trusted site in
IE --> Tools --> Internet Options --> Security --> Privacy Tab ---> Trusted
Sites --> Sites

After I recheck the settings that you have mentioned , I will the delete the
index.dat files ( after creating a new admin account ) and the temp internet
files that you mentioned in your previous post and then I will run the netsh
winsock reset command and then reboot the system.
I will also rescan the system using Ad-aware and Sypbot Search & Destroy and
then run the other command that you mentioned of sfc /scannow .

Hopefully after all that , the system should work on that web site.
:)

Once again , thank you for all your time and help.
:)

Yes, But I will try to see if the issue been resolved before do the final
two steps, which deleting the index.dat and the System file checker (SFC
/SCANNOW).
I will leave these two to the last resource of troubleshooting, also
perform
each one alone and try to access that site, if resolved the problem just
clearing the caches and assigning the site in the trusted site zone that
great you don't need to perform the rest of steps.
Do not forget if not broken don't fix it leave alone ;-)

Hi nass ,
I will do as you say and try and resolve the problem first by using the
method that you mentioned in your previous post before doing the last 2
steps of deleting of the index.dat file / temp files and running the sfc
/scannow command.

I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks.

HTH.

Hi nass ,
I have finally fixed the problem with IE6 locking up on a web site user
account.

The problem could have been that the web site was not put into the IE6
Trusted Web Site Properties or it was a problem with winsock.

I followed your above directions , most of the power settings were OK and
only needed a slight tweaking , entered the web site address into the IE
Trusted Web Site Properties , ran the netsh winsock reset command , rebooted
the system and then ran the user account/ web site through it's paces and
there was not one problem with it.

I could leave the user account idle for 5 minutes or so and I could still
navigate and use the web site and IE6 didn't lock up once.

I could let the web site idle for 10 - 15 minutes , then when I tried to
access the web site again , I got logged out , which is what it is
supposed to do.

I spent more than half an hour testing / letting it idle for a few minutes
and starting it again , the navigation and the loading of the web pages
seemed a lot more quicker and responsive that it was any time before.

I am not sure if it was because I added the web page to the Trusted Sites
Properties or because running the netsh command to reset winsock.

The thing that I can't really work out is that when the user logs into his
account , it displays the http protocol and when I went to add the web site
into the Trusted Web Site Properties , it would only accept the https
protocol.

Anyway nass , thank you very much for all your help and for taking the time
to respond to my post.

Glad to help and you are welcome.
To the trusted issue being (HTTPS) it is normal IE make sure you don't put a
bad site in your trusted sites so it is normal.
My Guess was the Winsock not working properly be registering it make it work
again, thanks for letting us know.
Regards,
nass
