IE closes window, opens another on link click

I am running Win XP Home, SP2 installed.

Virus defs up to date through McAfee.

When I click on an internet link or Windows tries to open an IE 6 window,
the existing window closes and new window opens. I cannot have more than one
IE window open.

Is this spyware/adware or a virus or setting that I "adjusted" myself?

Hi Geoff

Try the following and see if it helps:

Go to Tools>Internet Options> Advanced.
Uncheck "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts".

Additional possibilities:

This is usually caused by third-party browser add-ons. Disable all Pop-up
blockers if installed any. Here is a detailed note from Don Varnau, MS-MVP
Internet Explorer.
