IE Behavior

Hello. I seem to be having some extrange IE behaviors. Upon boot up, I can
open IE and browse the internet. After a while, I am unable to use IE to
browse the internet. It would seem that there is not internet connection. I
can then open CMD and ping web sites. I thought it was an IE problem so I
downloaded Opera and firefox. Both of the programs experecience same
behavior. Use hijack tool, MS ANtispyware and other adware removal tools to
do scan and nothing came up. Running latest McAfee definition files and
latest OS patches for Windows XP SP2. Conducted full system scan with McAfee
and nothing came up. Looked at start up programs and there is nothing out of
the ordinary there. Any suggestions? By the way, I use Window Washer to
regularly clear my browser cache, etc.

When the behavior accurs I am still able to open Outlook and bring down
email or use a FTP program to upload files to my personal web site.

When the behavior occurs , I am not even able to access my router via the
normal 192.168.x.x web address. Again, pinging is not a problem. There is
internet connectivity. I could use my work laptop, and I am able to browse. I
have checked it with a laptop and my son's PC. All running same Win Xp SP2
with latest packages, etc. They do not experience the same behavior.

Your assiatnce is apperciated.

If other network functions still work, then it's doubtful the issue is NIC
driver related. Have you checked your Hosts file at:
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Ect
There should be only a single entry for Local Host 127.0.0.1
(with a few heading/comments using #)

You should check both System & Application Event logs for errors.
Because it works immediately after booting - perhaps a necessary
System Service is stopping or halting. I wouldn't totally rule out the
McAfee AV as a contributor.

By the way are you using a 3rd-Party Firewall or the XP Native one ?

Have you got a second ISP that you can use to find out if the problem is with
the software of the ISP that you're using when that happens?

I have two ISPs - one broadband and the other pay-as-you-go dial-up for
testing purposes and to use if something happens to the broadband.

Eric,

Local host is the one listed below. I am using the native XP forewall and the
one in my router is disabled. Nothing in the event viewer for application ,
security or System that would seem related to stopping a service, etc/.

Thans for any other guidance you may be able to provide.

I have two other PCs at my home. All running over the same broadband
connection. The other two PCs do not have this behavior. I would have thought
it was related to the broadband service, but as mentioned I am able to ping
from the PC when the behavior occures. I am able to also send and receive
email via Outlook, and I am also able to use a FTP client. All other
applications that may use IE, as well as IE, as the layer to browse or pull
internet content are the ones that appear to display this extrange behavior.

Thanks for any other recommendations.

Just curious, why do you have the Firewall function of the Router
disabled ? Speaking of Access equipment - have you checked to
see if a Firmware update is available for it ?
Very unusual that it initially works, and after a time stops. You may
want to consider using "Statically" assigned parameters for the NIC
instead of DHCP from the router. (Address, Gateway & DNS).
It's more difficult to diagnose a "Time-Lapse" type of issue, since
basic operation is OK. It also wouldn't appear to be an Add-In
(ActiveX) since Opera/Firefox don't utilize them. Sometimes these
types of issues fall back to the simplest of things. Do you have a
single Access device (Modem) or a combo of ISP device and then
a separate Router ?
I'll mull it over and if any ideas/suggestions come to mind, I'll post
back.

I ahve the firewall disabled at the router because of a VPN client I use with
my work PC.

Please note that I use my work PC from home, as well as My son and Daughters
PC and neither of them display this behavior. It is only my prsonal desktop.
Therefore it is not a broadband / NIC problem.

I thought maybe it was, and the PC I have has two(100 Mb and Giga). So I
switched over to see it that would help. Same problem occured.

As emntioned, when the behaviors occurs on my PC I am still able to open a
command prompt and ping web sites, my router, other PCs on my home hetwork.
It is just IE that no longer responds. Not even to opening my router setup
page at 192.168.x.x.

Thans for your assiatnce.

Appreciate the follow-up, suppose I did get off track on that last post.

For how long after boot-up does IE work ? Also does your Network
Connections folder have a "Gateway" device shown ?

I experience a very similar problem on my laptop.

I can start browsing the internet after about 20 minutes upon bootup...

I have the tray icons of the network connections near the clock (both when
disconnected and connected), they don't appear if not after about 20-30
minutes, exactly when I can start using web browser...

No particular error events in the event viewer, already scanned with
antivirus, antispyware, etc .
A curiosity: the events of the series 7035/7036 begin after about 30 minutes
since boot time...

For the rest, I can open ssh connections in the meanwhile, I can even using
redirection of X server of linux machine, and browsing with netscape
redirected with X.

I have 2 nics, one wireless and one fastethernet lan, at home I use the
wirelss, at work the cabled, and the problem is the same

Of course, I have XP sp2 and the latest patches.
The problem has begun in december, in the first days I experienced also
freezed desktop, for about 2 - 3 minutes after boot and freezed taskbar, from
start menu to the clock. Everything stopped when the icons of nics finally
appeared... and the system became stable...

Any suggestion?

Hello, This has happened to my unit (once in a while) for the last 2 months,
found no answers.
Have GoBack installed and use it as soon as this problem occurs. Return to
the last safe point and continue without problem.
Can the e-mail program be used to send mail?
Has anyone try to use System Restore after the problem occurs?
Is there any way of finding what happened right before this behavior occurs?
I simple use the system have "very" little knowledge.
Windows XP Home SP2 with latest updates, IE6, OE6.
Hope that someone can find an answer to this minor problem.
take care
