IE Back Button causes "The page cannot be displayed" error msg!

Hi guys. I have a really strange problem that I would appreciate help with.
There is nothing in the KB that I found relating to this issue specifically.

I have a user running WinXP Home SP2 and IE6--latest versions of everything.
There are two logins on the machine. On one login, every time they go to
ANY web site that has a search engine, get results, follow a link to a result
page, then click the Back button on IE to go back to the search results page,
they get the cryptic "The page cannot be displayed" error message.

When they log in as the other user ID on the machine and do exactly the same
type of search, the Back button works correctly. I checked all the typical
IE settings between the two logins and there is nothing obviously different,
including the Add-ons between the two browsers. They are even exactly the
same versions of IE.

These searches are done on unsecure web sites, so it's not a security issue.
Furthermore, going to the same web sites from the login that has the problem
using Netscape works correctly!

Very weird. Any ideas? I would LOATHE having to perform a complete
reinstall of IE6, since that also involves having to perform all the WinXP
updates over again, including SP2 and then there's no guarantee that will
even fix the problem.

Thanks a lot.

This is just a possible quick fix, but I'm curious to see if it works, and
in the meanwhile I'll investigate the issue. But, try this...from the user
account that is acting up, right click the back button, then see if the page
you want to go back to is listed, click on it to see if it does bring you
back without the error message.

Not the identical error, but likely same fix:

IE6 SP1 fixes this problem - 319792
http://support.microsoft.com?scid=kb;EN-US;Q319792

Your settings may be incorrect - 183763
http://support.microsoft.com?scid=kb;EN-US;Q183763
Often this option is set by the web site itself, but you can try creating a
new IE cache if you wish.

Hi Steve,

Had ab identical problem running IE6 on XP home and SP2 recently installed.

I looked at some on the other posts on the site which suggested clearing out
the internet cache.

I simply went to control panel/internet options and delete temprary internet
files option from the dialogue box.

This has seemed to resolve the issue. If I get a reoccurence will issue
another post but seems to have worked for me, why don't you give it a try.

Hope it works for you.

Cheers

I have a post in here, same problem. In THIS section of posts, the advice to
try boilerplate MS knowledge base only applies to older versions, not SP2.
This is a new SP2 problem. The fix to uncheck "Do not save encrypted to
disk" (Tools/Inet Options/Advanced) does not work becuz mine is already that
way and I still get "Warning: Page Expired." I delete temp files often, does
not fix this. SP2 has some kinks in it, and this MUST be addressed by MS
folks, but so far they haven't noticed it, I guess, and getting thru to them
is like getting into Fort Knox. I am fairly certain this is a setting,
probably in the above-referenced Advanced section, but I don't know which one
it is...I think SP2 added a few, so could be it's in there somewhere to
uncheck or check. ANYBODY got ideas???!!!! Gigi

I have SP2 and do not have the problem, so it does not appear to be an SP2
problem. Does this happen every time you click the Back button? What if
you click the down arrow on the right side.
