ie and or java

I have IE 6 with service patck sp1.. i recenty
reformatted my harddrive becuase of a bug. since then.
once reformatted we had norton professional installed.
the computer worked fine. now it has developed a problem.
when i try to browse, about every other page comes up
blank and i have to refresh. i am also have problems with
pictures that are supposed to download with the page, a
blank box comes where the picture should be and has a
small red x in the top left corner. everything i have
read kind of leads to installing java2 from sun.com. can
someone please help me. i have windows XP home edition,
internet explore 6
