Java applet failed IE 6.0 SP1

I have some problems with java errors when trying to open
web pages in IE 6.0 with SP1, running windows 2000.
Error loading java applet failed, also get applet entry
applet notinited. This site is an internal webpage on the
company's intranet web page and will not open the page.
there is also a red X on the top Left hand corner of this
page. I have re-installed IE 6.0 But the issue
remains.Thinking of re-installing java ??
Let me know if this is a fix and what version and where to
download it at if you know this will fix the issue.
This seems to be a very well known bug in IE 6.0 SP1.
