Please help, after my husband surfed his unusual sites we appeared to get a
virus that has de stabilised our computer. I have run virus scans and also
error fix and spyware scans. internet explorer no longer opens many pages,
java will not work on all sites. I cannot open windows update nor will it
allow any downloads for tools to fix the problems. I have tried to boot from
disc and repair xp but the problems are still there. It allows me to open
some windows live sites but not email and settings. any advice welcome I am
losing too much hair.

try booting into
safemode.

then try safemode
w/networking and
see if you can connect
to the internet.

if your computer
runs ok in these
modes, then it
will be a clue.

Hi,
don't mean to be rude but i am really stressed out here, I have no clue as I
am not very computer minded, but i took your advice and it started in safe
mode but would not start in safe mode with networking. I have irreplaceable
photo's of a baby on my system and all i want to do is back up all my docs
and i would f disc it but unfortunately the system is not stable enough to
allow me time to get it done.
programs i can replace if i can just get ie 7 to work properly but it will
not download anything it shows web page could not be displayed. I have tried
uninstalling it and reinstalling it to no avail

As long as you can boot into Safe Mode, you should be able to copy all
your important data (including your photos) to an external hard drive.
How many GBs? A USB flash dirve may be all you need.

ok, then you provided
a clue.

if you can not boot
in safemode with networking,
then this is a big clue.

however, if you can
boot in regular safemode,
then you have the opportunity
to do what daave suggested.

afterwards, this mode will
be useful in helping you
fix your configuration.

let us know when your
ready.

Try to Boot up into safe mode and try System Restore to an earlier point.
If that did help try the cleaning steps below. Tr to download the tools on a
clean PC and copy it to CD/DVD and then you can run it on your infected
machine from the Removable storage (CD/DVD/USB Flash drive).

1... Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
you will see these Options:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs
| Advanced .

Click on General Tab (1st Tab on the left) and you will see a Button called
[ Clear History ..] click on it to clear your History caches, then click on
[Delete Files..] to delete Internet Files created over the time, click on [
Delete Cookies...] to delete your cookies left by visiting websites.

Click on Connections tab then click LAN Settings Button, there make sure
nothing checked.

= Then try to Disable the Add-Ons on your Browser somehow installed on your
browser, On how to disable the Add-ons follow this:
Click on Programs Tab and then click the Manage Add-Ons Button there Disable
the None/Not Verified Plug-ins/Add-ons ( you need to Renable them one-by-one
later and see which is the culprit .
How to manage Add-Ons:
