Some programs won't open in Windows XP

I downloaded a trial version of Norton 360 Premier with OS Windows XP from
their site. The following day, I had trouble opening up several programs on
desktop or anywhere else for that matter. So, I bought the software disk of
Norton 360 Premier, downloaded it and did a complete scan for viruses, etc.
and it says I have no viruses. I've been told I have a vicious maleware or
serious virus. Need help in what to do in finding and destroying whatever the
problem is.

From your post " I downloaded a trial version of Norton 360 Premier with OS

culprit - first troubleshooting step would be removal of Norton.
Regarding "... I've been told I have a vicious maleware or serious
virus.... " - by whom (reliable)?

When I bought the CD version of Norton 360 Premier, it automatically
uninstalled the any other Norton versions on my computer. After I installed
the bought version, I prompted it to do a full virus, etc. scan and it said
nothing harmful was found. So, I had an online chat with tech support at
Symantec and he said I have virus. Only way they could definitely detect it
is if I pay a fee. Trying to avoid that but might have to go with that
because I still can't open some programs.

Burn one of these to a CD (using a working machine) and boot the
infected machine with it:

BitDefender works well..

Download & run (freebee) Then find another REAL AV program.

Norton leaves a bad taste in the mouth of some folks even when it
"works".

This is not the first problem post I have seen that starts with
"...then I installed Norton..."

If want to try some AV products with a better reputation, try these
free ones at your leisure.

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these three malware
detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/
AVG (AVG): http://free.avg.com/

People have different opinions about what is the "best" (or worst) AV.

AFAIK Avast would only replace the anti-virus component in Norton 360 so
you should make a more comprehensive proposal.
