Windows Problem - but no solution ????

J

Jillianne

I have Windows XP (3). This problem that is now happening often.

I have a problem opening programs. Seems to be a hang up somewhere. -----

I have a problem closing and opening programs. When I send the report after
using Task Manager to finally close a program the reponse is that it is a
Window Problem. I have all updates (automatically) so the resolve is not
there. ------

The last 2 times IE just froze and would not close at all. Had to shut
down and restart. ------
If this is a Windows problem, shouldn't Windows have a solution? -----

I have Norton 360 - and there is no virus or anything Norton can find. It is
a Windows problem.

HELP SOMEBODY PLEASE.

David B.

Don't be so quick to assume it's a Windows problem, my money would be on
Norton 360.

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
if you wish.

Reboot.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net stop wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\wups2.dll
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net start wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86):
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
.... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the root
of the C:\ drive, do the following:

Close all Internet Explorer Windows and other applications.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE
--> Click OK.

(If asked, select "Run.) --> Click on NEXT --> Select "I agree" and click on
NEXT --> When it finishes installing, click on "Finish"...

Reboot.

Log on as a user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer and
visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a CUSTOM scan...
(Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages -
first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You can
release the CTRL key after clicking each time.)

Once the scan is done, select just ONE of the high priority updates
(deselect any others) and install it.

Reboot again.

If it did work - try the web page again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a
time.

The Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommend
against the "Windows Search" one. I would completely avoid the Optional
Hardware updates.

Come back - let us know if that worked.
.... Really - come back and let everyone know if that worked.

I agree with you.
I get the same problem with IE7 at times, stating it is a Windows Problem,
but no solution.
At times in Error reports> more info> transfers to website, they are quick
to blame updates, spyware, etc.

It occurs if NOT using Norton (for David B.), and I have a completely clean
machines ( for Shenan)

Hello Mick Murphy

You said "I have a completely clean machines"

Please will you explain just *how* you know that to be true. Thanks.

Dave

PS I believe malware can (and does) hide from view! ;)

I have my own IT Business cleaning up other people's problem machines.
OK?

Please explain whay *you* don't answer the OP's question?

I think Jillianne will have enough on her plate following the excellent
advice from Shenan Stanley. Should she return as requested, if her
problem has not been resolved I may make a suggestion then. OK?

As you are an 'expert' I'd be grateful if you would answer my original
question.

Put your money where your mouth is!

I can't stand Internet Explorer and choose to use Firefox instead. IE
is one of the first things I "replace" on a system I get a hold of,
but that is my preference.

Poor Jillianne.

If you get errors, exactly what are they? Posting with a subject of
"Windows Problem - but no solution ????" and no details in the subject
or in the post just makes people ask more questions, assume things
(heaven forbid) and delay your solution. You have to give more
details or everyone will get frustrated.

The advice so far is reasonable, but it will take you a long time and
lots of posting and reading.

I am impatient. I generally want my answers right now.

The clickable link to http://www.dts-l.com/goodpost.htm does not work
(for me). Neither does trying http://dts-l.org (I was fooled for a
few seconds). IE and Firefox both give me the dreaded 404 error.
Maybe nobody has actually tried those links in a while. Could be me.

I was able to determine the address of http://66.39.69.143/goodpost.htm
is where you want to go, I think. This works properly in either
browser. I would figure it out some more, but alas... I am not a
professional.

I'm having the same problem as Jillianne. I tried doing Shenan's solution,
but at the last Start - Run command, it wouldn't accept it and asked if it
was typed wrong.

This started about 2 weeks ago and is getting worse every day. I checked
the IE logs and there are at least 20 hang time errors. It's nearly
impossible to use the internet now.

Any suggestions as this is getting really frustrating. Oh, the 2 spy wares
didn't find anything really wrong, just some cookies.

Thanks for your help!

Have you tried to do a 'System Restore', Angela?

In XP Start/All Programs/Accesories/System Tools/System Restore

Then simply follow the directions.

Thanks Dave, but that doesn't seem to help either. I restored to a month
ago, before any problems cropped up. Any other ideas?
