ie 6.0.29 serious problems / ie 7 installs fail

I have Windows XP SP2 and am unable to use ie 6.0.29. I have no idea what
changed and have run thorough McAfee Virus Scans and Webroot Spy Sweeper. I
have also uninstalled Yahoo's and Google's Task Bars.

I can click on the ie icon on my desktop taskbar and my homepage will
appear. Other than that anything else produces multiple ie windows that
are blank and irratic. For example clicking any icon on my desktop,
selecting a url in a email, selecting any item from my favorites list,
typing in my desired url in the address bar of ie, and then selecting GO . .
.. . will all cause the multiple irratic blank ie windows.

Only deleting these windows using the task manager is effective.

I did try installing ie 7 (3 times) via the Help and Support tool and
Windows Update. Everything went great except that after the installs I was
notified that the installation failed. Update gave me an error code of
0x05.

Note that yesterday I submitted a MS Online Customer Service request.
Twenty four hours later I received an email response recommending that I
call the Technical Support Team at 866-234-6020 and that unlimited support
is available by phone til Nov. 1st. That number sent me to several
automated troubleshooters where I spent several hours today and achieved
nothing. I could find no route to an actual Technical Support person.

Note also that there was mention in the response that I would not be able to
check their responses online because my submitted incident was without
Windows Live ID.

Blah, blah, blah . . . . HELP !

Hi,
1. Try disabling all add-ons from Tools> Manage add-ons.

2. Download and run ie-rereg from
http://iefaq.info/index.php?action=artikel&cat=24&id=31&artlang=en

3. This may be a malware problem.
See these sites for help, including the posting of a HijackThis log to one
of the forums where HJT logs are analyzed:

Look for an "Important- Read this first" type message so that protocol is
followed and the process of analyzing the log works as designed.

Hope this helps,

Thank you for your time and sharing your knowledge.

Clicking on Tools>Manage add-ons did nothing so apparently there are no more
add-ons.

Trying to run ie-rereg only brought up the problem blank irratic windows.

Following the other hot-links you provided will have same problem.

I am throwing in the towel and taking PC to local shop. He has found
malware I could not in the past so am sure he can resolve again.

Thank you again !

I am not sure if you are trying to put IE 6 back on your machine or IE 7.
Since it appears that you have a clean system maybe the Internet Explorer 6
browser became corrupt. in that case perhaps take IE 7 off with add remove
programs, that will put you back to IE 6 then you can reinstall IE 7 or try
to troubleshoot from there. Of course I don't know if this will work. It is
a speculation.
Best Regards,
Kaja
