IDE cable placements

I am (for the first time) building a PC from scratch.

It will have 2 EIDE hard drives and 2 other IDE devices (CD/DVD & tape
drive).

Which is the better of these configurations and why?

1: EIDE1-------HD2------HD1
EIDE2-------CD/DVD---Tape

2: EIDE1-------Tape-----HD1
EIDE2-------CD/DVD---HD2

3: EIDE1-------HD1------Tape
EIDE2-------HD2------CD/DVD

My previous PC (local white box builder) used #1. Is that better?

Also the HDs (seagate Barracudas) have jumper choices of Master, Slave
or cable select. Cable select is the default and they are shipped with
that jumper setting. Any reason not to use it?

Aren't the Barracudas SATA drives? You didn't specify your motherboard, but
if they have sata connectors you would connect your two HDs to them. You
can then connect your cd/dvd @ tape drive to the IDE connectors. As far as
which device to connect to which IDE connectors and master vs slave I'll
leave that up to others to answer.

atapi devices (CD/DVD and TAPE) can cause the controller to slow down to
their speed...

You need to google the answers!

Plus, I NEVER let the system make choices using Cable Select!

again, please google for the answers. Google.com runs on GNU/Linux
clusters, and uses SCSI technology for multiple read/writes, which are
the reasons that you get so many searches, done so well, and, so quickly!

Use #1. When you combine a high speed harddrive and a much slower data
transfer optical drive on the same IDE channel (master, slave), as your
other choices show, the harddrive can only work at the same slower rate as
the optical drive. Bad.
