Hello
WinXPSp2
My old Compaq box contains 2 HDs and 2 R/W CD roms.
IDE0 ribbon cable to HD1 and CD
IDE1 to HD2 and CD.
All has worked well for some time
HD1 drive C: and HD2 D:

Other day I Vacumed the inside (really needed this:))
Must have knocked the wiring becausd HD2 was not detected
resulting in the CD rom drives taking the D and E assingments.
I then disconnected the CD roms and on booting up
only the C: drive showed. OK.
I then connected the second drive which i thought would
take the D: assignment but not so. It is Now E:

How do i get my original more logical drive assignments back?
It would save me having to alter my backup progs and shortcuts.
Anyway... where did D: goto?
Any thoughts welcome

Click Start / Run / diskmgmt.msc. This gives you the
opportunity to see all partitions an re-assign drive letters.

Most likely you will need to re-assign the CD Rom (if it's using D:) to a
letter that unused.

Right click on My Computer, select Manage, then select Disk Management. Then
on the right hand side of the Computer Management window right click on the
drive letter that you want to change and select the Change Drive Letter and
Paths option. Once you have re-assigned the letter for the CD-R, the letter
D should now be available. Now select Drive 1 (originally your D drive) and
re-assign the drive letter to D.

Reboot to verify and re-assign the CD-Rs back to their original assigned
drive letters (most likely E and F) if necessary.

That did the trick. Back to normal again.
Thankyou very much.
You are all very patient and helpful peeps.

Standard practice is to put the hard drives on one controller, and your CDs
on the other. By putting a cd on the same controller as your hard drive, you
slow down the access time.
