Hi.

3 PC's in a network, 2 with XP Pro and one with 2000 Pro.
1 XP Pro is the "main" PC. Through a network switch I
have everything connected and all computers can talk to
each other, print, share files etc. So far so good. Until
I moved home recently, all PC's shared the internet
connection quite happily, now they won't. I have recently
deinstalled McAfee Firewall and I think this may have
something to do with it...

I have tried everything, searched through thousands of
sites, changed a million settings and still it won't
work. Sometimes I can get one PC to connect through
the "main" one for about 5 minutes, then it's back
offline again and I start throwing things around the
room...

Can anyone help me? I think I probably have to start from
the very beginning... What should my settings be? Should
I give up, return to typewriters?

Thanks for any help,

Fraser G

can you ping each other by ip? if yes, can you ping by name? also make sure
no firewall running on the LAN.

Since you've de-installed McAfee Firewall, enable XP's built-in
Internet Connection Firewall on the main PC's Internet connection to
protect your computers from Internet hackers.

If you haven't already done so, disable and then re-enable ICS on the
main PC. That might be all that's needed.

If not, it's possible that de-installing McAfee has caused the
problem. Downloading and running WinSock XP Fix on the main PC might
help:

http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

Otherwise, here are some tests you can run to help find the problem:

1. On the ICS host computer, right click the local area network
connection and click Status | Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: none
DNS Server = none

2. On an ICS client computer, right click the local area network
connection and click Status | Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1

3. If #1 and #2 are right, open a command prompt window on a client
and enter these lines. Each one should get four replies:

ping 192.168.0.1
ping 216.239.39.99
ping google.com

4. If #1-#3 are right, enter these addresses in Internet Explorer.
They should both take you to the Google web page:

http://google.com

Hi again. Thanks for your help so far! Pinging the main
PC works fine, IP and name. Pinging Google by IP works,
but not by name. Opening the google site in IE works by
IP but not by name.

Any other ideas? Have tried everything else you suggested!

Thanks again,

You're welcome. Your test results show that DNS resolution isn't
working on the client computer. Here are some possible solutions:

1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools | Internet Options | Connections
| LAN Settings, and clear all of the boxes on that screen.

2. Specify your ISP's DNS server address, instead of 192.168.0.1, as
the DNS server in the TCP/IP properties for the client's local area
network connection

---Nothing there - all clear...---

---Easier said than done - AOL's secret numbers... could
it be 205.188.146.146? That's the only likely looking one
when I do an ipconfig---

Hi again Steve!

Things are getting worse! Something I didn't say yet - I
connect through AOL using PPPOE - normally works fine.
Now, after making too many changes the following occurs:

PC1 (main) connects through PPPOE, then I log on
with "normal" username - mail ok, no internet. BUT - PC1
directly through DSL modem, no problem - everything ok.

PC2 - network ok, google "by number" ok, but not by name,
but (here's the best bit) only when I am logged on to AOL
on the main PC (PPPOE is of course active) - when I'm
offline (on main PC - only the PPPOE remains active),
then everything's ok - network, internet, mail - the
works...

Now I'm very confused. Is there a simple (idiot-proof)
way for me to reset everything on both computers and
start again from the top? Please say yes! I honestly
thought I was beginning to understand computers!
Evidently not... "If I had a hammer..."

Thanks again, not only for your help, but for your
patience - I'm sure you have much better things to do!

You're welcome, Fraser. I'm glad to help, and I wish that I could
tell you how to fix the problem.

But, when there are problems with using AOL, I recommend contacting
AOL for help. AOL has its own proprietary software, and they're the
ones who know how it works. In my experience, standard Windows setup
and troubleshooting techniques often don't work on systems using AOL.
