ICS on a stand alone PC

Am running SBS 2003 with a few nodes. Am not using the second NIC on the SBS
but terminating the Internet on a stand alone PC which I want to share with
other nodes in the intranet. Am not able to start ICS on the stand alone PC
as it says that ICS has been disabled by the network administrator.

When Windows Firewall/ICS is started on the SBS 2003, an error msg. comes:
Error 170: The requested resource is in use.

After going through the various suggestions in this group, tried disabling
RPC but still could not run the Firewall/ICS and believe that till this is
not done, cannot run ICS on the stand alone PC.

Shall appreciate any advice.

I don't know about the specific error message you're getting, as I don't use
ICS, but I thought I'd ask why you're trying to do this in the first place.

You don't need two NICs on your server unless you're using ISA.

If you get a decent broadband router/firewall (note that I said decent! SPI
at least.) and connect its LAN interface to your switch, all the clients and
servers can point at that IP address as the default gateway. This would be a
much better solution. I'm not even a big fan of ICS on a small/home network,
as there are so many better options.

Thanks foir your reply. As you rightly said, I want to point to the stand
alone PC for the internet connection instead of the router. For this ICS is
required but ICS is not working on the PC.

Right. And I'm suggesting that you not do that. What is the conceivable
benefit of doing this? It's less secure and less efficient. Even if you
don't have the budget for a heavy-duty firewall, an inexpensive
consumer-grade NetGear/Linksys/D-Link (router appliance with SPI) would be
better.

That said, if you're having trouble with ICS on WinXP, you might check out
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/ or do some googling. Or,
someone else with more experience may reply in this thread. I myself replied
only because I think there are better ways to accomplish what you wish.
