ICS not working

I have set up my desktop(Win 98SE) to network with my laptop (Win XP) and
can transfer files OK
Each PC can access the internet separately but my set up for ICS is not
working.The Laptop is the host P.C. and the desktop the client.
What can be wrong?

Any ICS host must have two separate modems: one to get to the web, and
one (a NIC) to get to the ICS client. If your laptop gets to the web
via DSL or cable, then your laptop must have two NICs, which is rare.

Thanks for you comments.
I have a crossover cable between my lapatop and my desktop.
I have checked each PC can connect seperately to the Internet but once I
disconnect my desktop and rely on the crossover cable i get the message "No
dial tone"
I should have said that my XP is the Home version

If your problem is just that the ICS host is not automatically dialing up
to your ISP when the ICS client tries to access the web, then the solution

I have just learned from another source that to use the Internet I do not
need to dialup on the 2nd PC. Having connected the first PC I can then
automatically use the 2nd on the Internet.
I have tried this and it works OK. My Internet Gateway Connection was there
without me realising it.
But if I use Outlook Express and try and look at a news group the dialup
command automatically appears
Is this a setting problem?

I think so. Did you try the suggestion in
