HI,

I have set up a wireless network, 64bit encryption etc. I
wish to share the DSL connection on the machine connected
to the Linksys access point. **PROBLEM** The shared
internet connection is displayed on every computer in the
taskbar and data is being transmitted and recieved from
all computers. However when you wish to access the
internet and view a web page, you recieve the "The page
cannot be displayed", I have allowed the other computers
on the network to be allowed full access via the
firewall, all files on the other computers can be
accessed by any machine and LAN gaming can be carried out
with very low Latency. But still I cannot get any web
pages to display.

Any ideas will be very highly appreciated.

Thanks very much

Chris

These tests will help find the problem:

1. On the ICS host computer, right click the local area network
connection and click Status | Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: none
DNS Server = none

2. On an ICS client computer, right click the local area network
connection and click Status | Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1

3. If #1 and #2 are right, open a command prompt window on a client
and enter these lines. Each one should get four replies:

ping 192.168.0.1
ping 216.239.39.99
ping google.com

4. If #1-#3 are right, enter these addresses in Internet Explorer.
They should both take you to the Google web page:

http://216.239.39.99
http://google.com

Hi again,

Thanks very much for your help, however, there is still
the problem that i cannot enter a websites name into the
address bar. If i enter the I.P address of google.com
(216.239.39.99) i can access the website and search the
web from this location.

This is where the problem occurs, if you wish to enter a
URL you cannot view the webpage, it appears that entering
the I.P. gives you the "right" to connect to the page,
but when you wish to enter the www address, you cannot
recieve any of the pages data.

I hope you can help me remedy this problem.

Thanks

Chris

Since you can access a web site by its IP address but not by its name,
something is wrong with DNS resolution. What does test #2 above show?

I'm sorry, but I still don't know what the result of test #2 was. Did
it show the values that I listed? Did it show 192.168.0.1 for the DNS
server?

If it did, try configuring the TCP/IP properties manually on the
computer that has the problem. Right-click the LAN connection, click
Properties | Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) | Properties, and specify
these values:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1 or your ISP's DNS server(s)

You can find your ISP's DNS server address(es) on the ICS host
computer:

1. Right-click the shared Internet connection.
2. Click Status.
3. Click Support.
4. Click Details.
